How the date of Tet is worked out
The first day of Tet is the first day of the first lunar month, that is the new moon day of the first lunar month after the winter solstice, computed for the GMT+7 time zone used by the Vietnamese lunisolar calendar. Because a lunar month runs 29 or 30 days while a solar year runs 365 or 366, Tet drifts between 21 January and 20 February and follows no simple repeating cycle. The figure on this page is recomputed from the site's own lunisolar algorithm rather than read from a stored table.
Note: the date of the first day of Tet is a calendar fact, separate from the official Tet holiday schedule announced by the government each year.
