Mathematician, founder of global optimization theory
Hoàng Tụy was born on 17 December 1927 in Xuân Đài village, Điện Bàn, Quảng Nam, into a family with a scholarly tradition. He was a descendant of Governor Hoàng Diệu.
He taught at the Hanoi University of Education and the University of Hanoi until 1968. In 1964 he introduced the method later named after him, the Tụy cut, regarded as the founding moment of a new branch of mathematics: global optimization theory. With Professor Lê Văn Thiêm, he was one of the two pioneers who built mathematics as a discipline in Vietnam.
He left around 140 scientific works and three monographs in the field. He died on 14 July 2019 in Hanoi, aged 92.
