Thạch Lam, whose real name was Nguyễn Tường Vinh, was born on 7 July 1910 in Thái Hà, Hoàn Long, Hanoi, with ancestral roots in Cẩm Phô, Hội An, Quảng Nam, into a family of civil servants descended from mandarins.
He was the younger brother of Nhất Linh and Hoàng Đạo, both writers in the Tự Lực văn đoàn group. Besides Thạch Lam he also signed himself Việt Sinh and Thiện Sỹ.
At fifteen, finding himself behind in school, he had his birth records redrawn and his name changed to Nguyễn Tường Lân so that he could skip four years. The detail is worth remembering when reading anything about his personal documents.
His prose leans towards sensation and the small movements of ordinary life. He died on 27 June 1942.
