Trịnh Công Sơn was born on 28 February 1939 in Buôn Ma Thuột, Đắk Lắk, into a family from Huế whose ancestral village was Minh Hương in Hương Trà, Thừa Thiên Huế. He was the eldest of eight siblings.
He began writing songs in 1958. No exact count of his output exists; estimates put it at no fewer than 600 songs, of which some 236 are widely known. Most are love songs, alongside a body of anti-war songs written during the war years. The voice most associated with his music is Khánh Ly. He also wrote poetry and painted.
He died on 1 April 2001. In 2024, for the 85th anniversary of his birth, a statue of him was unveiled on the bank of the Perfume River in Huế.
