Painter, known for his paintings of Hanoi's Old Quarter
Bùi Xuân Phái was born on 1 September 1920 in Kim Hoàng village, Vân Canh commune, Hoài Đức district, in the former Hà Tây province, now part of Hanoi.
He graduated in painting from the École des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine, in the 1941 to 1945 cohort. Returning to Hanoi in 1952, he lived at 87 Thuốc Bắc Street until his death. In 1956 and 1957 he taught at the Hanoi Fine Arts School.
His paintings of Hanoi's Old Quarter are known by a name of their own in Vietnamese, phố Phái, meaning Phái's streets. He died on 24 June 1988.
