Đoàn Nguyên Đức, widely known by his nickname "bầu Đức," was born on December 6, 1962 in An Nhơn, Bình Định province, into a large farming family. After failing the university entrance exam several times, he turned to business, opening a small carpentry workshop making school furniture in Gia Lai around 1990. In 1993 he founded the private enterprise Hoàng Anh Pleiku, the forerunner of what became Hoàng Anh Gia Lai Joint Stock Company (HAGL). The business grew from furniture into minerals, rubber, hydropower and real estate, then listed on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange in 2008 under the ticker HAG, making him one of the wealthiest names on the Vietnamese stock market at the time.
Football and the HAGL Arsenal JMG academy
Alongside his business career, bầu Đức became known for his passion for football. He began investing in the HAGL football club in the early 2000s, signing Thai star Kiatisuk. In 2007 he founded the HAGL Arsenal JMG football academy, a partnership with English club Arsenal and the JMG group, Vietnam's first professionally run football academy. It trained a generation of notable players including Công Phượng, Xuân Trường and Tuấn Anh, who later helped drive the success of Vietnam's youth national teams.
Debt crisis and restructuring
Between 2011 and 2016, HAGL fell into a serious debt crisis after aggressive expansion into rubber, sugarcane and real estate projects in Laos and Cambodia, with outstanding debt at one point exceeding 30 trillion đồng. Bầu Đức sold off numerous assets, including his private aircraft and real estate projects, to pay down debt, and wrote an open letter to shareholders pledging to revive the company. He pivoted the business toward agriculture, focusing on banana cultivation for export to Japan and China, combined with pig farming fed partly on banana by-products to cut costs.
A comeback built on agriculture
After years of restructuring, HAGL gradually worked through its financial difficulties, cleared its accumulated losses and returned to profit from around 2021-2022. Bầu Đức has continued increasing his shareholding in HAGL, remains chairman of its board, and has set his sights on 2026-2030 as what he expects to be the company's most favorable period since its founding.
