Introduction

Hàn Mặc Tử, born Nguyễn Trọng Trí, was a prominent romantic poet in modern Vietnamese literature. He is best known for his poem 'Đây thôn Vĩ Dạ', considered a masterpiece and one of the finest works of modern Vietnamese poetry.

Career and Works

Hàn Mặc Tử was born in Quảng Bình and spent time living in Huế, where he studied at Pellevin school. His time in Huế left a deep impression on him, inspiring many of his works with the scenery and people of the region.

In 1938, at the age of 26, he wrote 'Đây thôn Vĩ Dạ'. At that time, he was suffering from leprosy, a severe disease considered incurable at the time. Despite the intense pain, he continued to write poetry, using it as a way to escape reality and express his longing, sorrow, and anguish.

The poem was first published in the collection 'Thơ Điên' (later renamed 'Đau Thương'), which appeared just two years before his death from illness at age 28. 'Đây thôn Vĩ Dạ' is not only his most famous work but also a vivid portrayal of Huế's beauty and a reflection of his romantic yet painful emotions.

Legacy

'Đây thôn Vĩ Dạ' is included in the 11th-grade literature curriculum in Vietnam and is regarded as a classic depiction of Huế's poetic landscape. Despite his suffering, Hàn Mặc Tử conveyed a deep love for life and people through his poetry. He is remembered as a talented but ill-fated poet whose works left an enduring mark on Vietnamese literature.
