Introduction
Nguyen Cong Phuong is a Vietnamese football forward who came through the Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) Arsenal JMG Academy. He belongs to the academy's first and second intake, alongside players such as Van Toan, Van Thanh, Xuan Truong and Tuan Anh, a generation noted for its technical, short-passing style and followed by large crowds from 2013 onwards.
Career
Rise and peak form
Cong Phuong emerged during a difficult period for Vietnamese football in 2012-2013. In late 2013, he and Xuan Truong performed ball-juggling in front of a large student crowd at the Hanoi University of Science and Technology stadium. About nine months later, he scored a solo goal against Australia's U.19 side at the AFF U.19 tournament at My Dinh Stadium.
At club level he played for Hoang Anh Gia Lai and Ho Chi Minh City. According to the cited sources, he has scored 48 goals in 123 matches in the V-League and first division, placing him among the leading domestic forwards. The 2021 season was described as his highest level of form, with six goals in 12 matches helping HAGL top the table after 12 rounds before the season was cancelled due to the pandemic.
Overseas experience
According to Tuoi Tre, Cong Phuong played for Mito Hollyhock (Japan, 2016), Incheon United (South Korea, 2019), Sint-Truiden V.V. (Belgium, 2019) and Yokohama FC (Japan, 2023-2024). He is noted as the first Vietnamese player to have played professionally in three countries. Thanh Nien reported that at all four clubs he did not leave a strong mark and generally stayed for little more than a season.
Recent period
In September 2024, Cong Phuong signed a three-year contract with Truong Tuoi Binh Phuoc, with an option to extend for one more year. The club was competing in the first division and aiming for promotion to the V-League, with a focus on cooperation with Japanese specialists. Speaking after signing, he said he saw his own dream reflected in the club's vision and professional approach, and expressed a desire to contribute to Vietnamese football and inspire young players.
Characteristics and legacy
According to Thanh Nien, Cong Phuong's career has carried heavy public expectations since he was young, alongside experiences such as training at Arsenal. He is described as one of the figures who helped revive fan interest and belief in Vietnamese football during a generational transition.
