Introduction
Nguyễn Công Phượng is a Vietnamese football forward who came up through the Hoàng Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) Arsenal JMG Academy. He belongs to the academy's first and second intake, the same generation as Văn Toàn, Văn Thanh, Xuân Trường and Tuấn Anh, players once known for a technical one-touch passing style and followed by a large audience from 2013.
Career
Beginnings and peak form
Công Phượng emerged in a period when Vietnamese football in 2012-2013 was struggling for results and image. At the end of 2013, he and Xuân Trường gave a keepy-uppy demonstration in front of a large crowd of students at the Hanoi University of Science and Technology stadium. About nine months later, he scored a solo goal against the U.19 Australia team at the U.19 Southeast Asia tournament held at Mỹ Đình stadium.
In club colours, he has played for Hoàng Anh Gia Lai and Ho Chi Minh City. Statistics cited by sources show 48 goals in 123 matches in the V-League and the first division, placing him among the top domestic scoring forwards. The 2021 season is seen as the period when he reached his highest form, with 6 goals in 12 matches, helping HAGL top the table after 12 rounds before the season was cancelled because of the pandemic.
Experience playing abroad
According to Tuổi Trẻ, Công Phượng has worn the shirts of foreign clubs including Mito Hollyhock (Japan, 2016), Incheon United (South Korea, 2019), Sint-Truiden V.V. (Belgium, 2019) and Yokohama FC (Japan, 2023-2024). He is recorded as the first Vietnamese player to have gone abroad to three countries. Thanh Niên newspaper judged that at all four clubs he tried, he did not leave a clear mark and mostly stayed only a little over one season.
Recent period
In September 2024, Công Phượng officially signed a three-year contract with Trường Tươi Bình Phước club, with an option to extend by one more year. The club was then playing in the first division and aiming for promotion to the V-League, while also focusing on professional cooperation with Japanese experts. Speaking after signing, he said he saw his dream through the club's vision and its professional approach to football, and expressed a wish to contribute to the development of Vietnamese football and to inspire young players.
Characteristics and marks
According to Thanh Niên newspaper, Công Phượng's career has been tied to the expectations of fans since he was young, alongside experiences such as having trained at Arsenal. He is mentioned as one of the standout figures who rekindled the faith and interest of audiences in Vietnamese football during a period of generational transition.
