Thái Dương and Thái Âm in Tử Vi: tịnh minh, phản bối, and the Sửu Mùi co-position

TL;DR: Thái Dương and Thái Âm in Tử Vi Đẩu Số are not merely a bright star and a dark star, but the yin-yang pair that shapes much of career, wealth, and fortune. The tịnh minh stance (Sun in Tị, Moon in Dậu shining onto a Sửu Mệnh) is classed by old texts as a noble configuration; the phản bối stance (both stars in hãm địa facing each other) usually indicates leaving one's homeland and a wandering life; and the Sửu Mùi co-position is the 'đồng tranh' configuration, which only develops when auspicious stars converge. Every conclusion must be set within the whole chart, never from a single pair of stars.

What are Thái Dương and Thái Âm in Tử Vi?

Thái Dương and Thái Âm are two stars in the main-star group, standing for the Sun and the Moon, for the Yang and Yin principles in the Tử Vi Đẩu Số system. In the school's conception, this pair is not simply two luminous stars but the emblem of power, reputation, and outward expansion (Thái Dương) and of gathering in, softness, and shelter (Thái Âm). Some Tử Vi documents cite the old masters as saying that it is the stance of Nhật Nguyệt that reveals the person with the talent to lead the world, rather than the bearer of Tử Vi or Thiên Phủ.

Two layers of meaning must be distinguished when reading this pair. The first is the đắc địa or hãm địa position of each star across the twelve earthly-branch palaces. The second is the relative stance of the two stars toward each other and toward the Mệnh palace, forming named configurations such as tịnh minh, phản bối, đồng cung, giáp Mệnh, and chiếu Mệnh. Beginners often look only at the first layer, rejoicing to see Thái Dương in Mệnh and worrying to see Thái Âm in hãm, and overlook the second layer, which decides most of the chart's practical meaning.

In the analysis common to Tử Vi books, Thái Dương is đắc địa when placed in the eastern and southern palaces such as Mão, Thìn, Tị, Ngọ, and hãm địa when placed in the west and north such as Tuất, Hợi, Tí, Sửu. Thái Âm is the reverse, đắc địa in Hợi, Tí, Sửu, Dần, and hãm địa in Mão, Thìn, Tị, Ngọ. It is this phase difference that produces the special stances when the two stars meet.

What is Nhật Nguyệt tịnh minh and why is it held to be a noble configuration?

Tịnh minh means 'bright together'. This configuration occurs when the Mệnh palace is set at Sửu, Thái Dương is placed at Tị, and Thái Âm is placed at Dậu, the two stars shining together onto Mệnh. All three palaces Sửu, Tị, Dậu belong to the Tị Dậu Sửu triple harmony, so Nhật Nguyệt both shine and converge, their light reinforcing rather than clashing.

In the tịnh minh stance, Thái Dương at Tị is near noon, its light strong and clear; Thái Âm at Dậu is when the moon has just risen, its light pure and clean. Neither is in a hãm position. This is why old texts rank tịnh minh among the good configurations, usually tied to literary careers, examinations, and early fame. The book Đẩu số tinh thành states plainly that this configuration requires the main star of the Mệnh palace to be vượng cát to be truly hợp cách, meaning the star ruling Mệnh must itself be strong, not relying on the two shining stars alone.

A variant is Nhật Nguyệt giáp Mệnh, when the Mệnh palace is at Sửu or Mùi and Nhật Nguyệt sit in the two adjacent palaces. Đẩu số tinh thành describes this configuration as also requiring a vượng cát main star in Mệnh to be hợp cách. In Tử Vi Khảo Luận, Hàm Chương has the line 'Nhật Nguyệt giáp Mệnh, giáp Tài gia cát diệu, phi quyền tắc phú', stressing that auspicious stars must converge for Nhật Nguyệt to exert their function.

Why is tịnh minh different from Nhật Lệ Trung Thiên and Nhật Xuất Phù Tang?

All three configurations involve a đắc địa Thái Dương but differ in structure. Nhật Lệ Trung Thiên is Thái Dương at Ngọ ruling Mệnh, with no malefic stars, with added auspicious stars, suited to people born in the years of Canh or Tân, or born by day. Nhật Xuất Phù Tang (also called Nhật Chiếu Lôi Môn) is Thái Dương at Mão ruling Mệnh, suited to those born by day. Tịnh minh, by contrast, is the structure of two stars shining together onto Mệnh, and does not require Thái Dương to rule Mệnh. What the three share is that Thái Dương must be đắc địa, but the reading and the applied meaning differ.

How is the phản bối stance of Nhật Nguyệt understood?

Phản bối is the stance in which Thái Dương and Thái Âm are both in hãm địa and face each other. Typical pairs include Thái Dương at Tuất facing Thái Âm at Thìn, Thái Dương at Hợi facing Thái Âm at Tị, and Thái Dương at Tí facing Thái Âm at Ngọ. In these stances both stars lose their light, and neither is strong enough to illuminate the Mệnh palace.

Đẩu số tinh thành describes those meeting Nhật Nguyệt phản bối as usually receiving little blessing from parents, and finding it hard to get on with superiors or employers. With added malefic stars such as Hỏa Tinh, it may indicate separation from parents in childhood; with severe malefic influence, abandonment. The book also records, however, that if auspicious stars converge, or if one leaves the ancestral home to make one's own way abroad, it can turn to good.

Tử Vi kinh nghiệm by Vương Đình Chi offers a distinct reading, notable for differing from the usual one. This book holds that Âm Dương in hãm is called phản bối but is 'vô ngại', the reason being that a woman must grow up and marry out of the house. For men, the book says, Âm Dương phản bối is nothing good, since they are forced to leave their homeland, live adrift, and endure a wandering life. This reading shows that the same stance can carry different meanings by sex and by school.

One point to note is that in Tử Vi kinh nghiệm the author clearly distinguishes phản bối due to hãm địa from phản bối due to meeting Tam Không. The book writes 'Âm dương hãm ngộ Tam Không thời sáng ra', meaning hãm địa meeting Tam Không can transform; conversely 'Âm dương miếu ngộ Tam Không thời tối lại', meaning đắc địa meeting Tam Không loses its light. This is an example showing that Tử Vi cannot be read from đắc or hãm position alone, but must consider interaction with other stars.

Is phản bối always bad?

Not necessarily. In Tử Vi kinh nghiệm the author records that Thái Dương meeting Hóa Kỵ in a đắc địa stance is still considered good, called 'Khánh vân phùng Nhật'; Thái Âm meeting Hóa Kỵ in a đắc địa stance likewise, called 'Khánh vân phùng Nguyệt'. This shows that even Hóa Kỵ, a star that causes obstruction, when meeting a đắc địa Nhật Nguyệt, can create the stance of 'five-coloured clouds attending the sun and moon', sheltering rather than obscuring. This is one of the subtleties that make Tử Vi hard to read mechanically.

Nhật Nguyệt co-positioned at Sửu Mùi: why do old texts say 'đồng tranh'?

The Sửu Mùi co-position is the stance in which Thái Dương and Thái Âm sit together in one palace, occurring at the two palaces Sửu and Mùi. This is a special position because Sửu and Mùi are both Earth's mộ khố, where energy is buried and held, needing time to accumulate before it can emerge[1]. When two stars of light and dark lie together in a mộ khố, they do not shine on each other but crowd into one narrow space.

An old text has the line 'Nhật Nguyệt đồng cung Sửu Mùi, tam phương vô cát, phản vi hung', meaning that if Mệnh is at Sửu or Mùi with Nhật Nguyệt co-seated, but the three directions and four cardinals have no auspicious stars converging, life will be merely enough for food and clothing, and eminence is hard to attain. Conversely, if auspicious stars such as Văn Khúc, Thai Phụ, Tọa Quý, Ân Quang, Thiên Quý, Thiên Khôi, Thiên Việt are met, the person may succeed on the literary and career path.

Tử Vi kinh nghiệm also cites an old verse: 'Mấy người bất hiển công danh, chỉ vì Nhật Nguyệt đồng tranh Sửu Mùi', but immediately adds that if Nhật Nguyệt meet Tả Phù, Hữu Bật, Văn Khúc, Văn Xương, they are again renowned. The two lines stand together, showing that the old masters never said the Sửu Mùi co-position is absolutely bad, but bad when auspicious stars are lacking, good when they converge.

Table comparing the three main stances of Nhật Nguyệt

The table only summarises the main features. In actual reading, each stance must also consider the palaces of Mệnh, Thân, Tài Bạch, Quan Lộc, and interaction with all the stars in the chart.

Why are Nhật Nguyệt held more important than even Tử Vi and Thiên Phủ in some cases?

Some Tử Vi documents cite the old masters as saying 'Nhật Nguyệt are the yin and yang of the Dịch, and the stance of these two stars makes clear that those who bear yin and yang are the ones with the talent to lead the world, not those who bear Tử Vi or Thiên Phủ'. This does not mean Tử Vi or Thiên Phủ are less important, but stresses that Nhật Nguyệt stand for the two basic operating principles of the universe, and that whoever grasps those two principles has true capacity to lead.

In Tử Vi Khảo Luận, Hàm Chương has the lines 'Nhật Nguyệt sáng gặp Vũ chiếu: giàu có lớn', and 'Nguyệt sáng gặp Sinh, Vượng rất giàu có', and 'Nhật Nguyệt sáng gặp Tam hóa: được nhiều người quý trọng'. These lines show that Nhật Nguyệt are not only fine standing alone, but must meet the right supporting stars to reach their full effect. A bright Thái Dương meeting Vũ Khúc, Hóa Lộc, or Tam Hóa rises greatly in value.

Limits when reading Nhật Nguyệt by stance

Đẩu số tinh thành devotes many passages to the influence of birth hour and birth season on Thái Dương. It holds that those born at night, or in autumn and winter, even with Thái Dương nhập miếu, are diminished, unfavourable for men in matters of kin, often out of step with the times, meeting failure in what they do, their strength not matching their will. Conversely, those born by day with a nhập miếu vượng Thái Dương are intelligent and loyal, with talent for organisation and leadership, decisive, resolute, with everything running smoothly, with authority and real power, gaining both fame and profit.

This, however, is the reading of one particular school, not a rule all books agree on. Đẩu số tinh thành also records that Thái Dương at Ngọ is Nhật Lệ Trung Thiên, but 'thịnh cực mà suy', what comes quickly also retreats quickly, and old age is unfavourable. This reminds us that even the position held to be Thái Dương's finest has its reverse side.

On Thái Âm, Đẩu số tinh thành describes Thái Âm at Hợi as usually having good fortune, harmonious relations with the mother or protection from an older woman of standing. Thái Âm at Mão is hãm địa, belonging to the 'Phản Bối' configuration, indicating a person intelligent and talented but with an uneven career and wealth path, having to pass through much hardship. The book also says that when Thái Âm at Mão shines toward Thái Dương at Hợi, any added malefic stars usually bring poverty and early death.

The core point Đẩu số tinh thành seeks to impress is this: to read a star, one must first survey the whole chart, weigh the stars interacting with one another together with palace positions and mệnh cục, and must never see a few positions and immediately pronounce good or bad. This is the overarching principle, applying to Nhật Nguyệt and to every other pair of stars in Tử Vi.

Practical conclusion

When reading the pair Thái Dương and Thái Âm in Tử Vi, follow a three-step order. Step one, determine the đắc địa or hãm địa position of each star. Step two, determine the relative stance of the two stars toward each other and toward the Mệnh palace, whether tịnh minh, phản bối, đồng cung, giáp Mệnh, or chiếu Mệnh. Step three, consider all auspicious and malefic stars converging, as well as birth hour, birth season, sex, and the related palace positions.

One should not read a single old verse and conclude at once. With the same line 'Nhật Nguyệt đồng tranh Sửu Mùi', one book may stress the bad part, another immediately adds the good part when auspicious stars are present. Learners should compare several sources, note clearly which source says what, and always ask: in what context is this configuration being read, and with which supporting stars. That is how to read Tử Vi both carefully and with depth.

Frequently asked questions

What is Nhật Nguyệt tịnh minh in Tử Vi?

Tịnh minh is the stance in which the Mệnh palace is set at Sửu, Thái Dương is placed at Tị, and Thái Âm is placed at Dậu, the two stars shining together onto Mệnh. Both stars are đắc địa, their light reinforcing rather than clashing. Old texts rank this among the noble configurations, but note that a vượng cát main star in the Mệnh palace is needed for it to be truly hợp cách.

Is the phản bối stance of Nhật Nguyệt always bad?

Not necessarily. Phản bối is when Thái Dương and Thái Âm are both in hãm địa facing each other, usually indicating leaving one's homeland, a wandering life, and little blessing from parents. However, if auspicious stars converge, or if one leaves the ancestral home to make one's own way abroad, it can turn to good. Some books also hold that Nhật Nguyệt in hãm meeting Tam Không turn bright, while in đắc địa meeting Tam Không they turn dark.

Why do old texts say Nhật Nguyệt co-positioned at Sửu Mùi is đồng tranh?

Sửu and Mùi are both Earth's mộ khố, where energy is buried and held. When Thái Dương and Thái Âm sit together in one palace within a mộ khố, the two stars of light and dark crowd into a narrow space instead of shining on each other, so old texts call it đồng tranh. This configuration only develops when auspicious stars converge, such as Tả Phù, Hữu Bật, Văn Xương, Văn Khúc; without auspicious stars, life is merely enough for food and clothing, and eminence is hard to attain.
