Name-and-birthday numerology is a modern system that took shape in the United States around the turn of the 20th century through the books and classes of L. Dow Balliett, and was developed further by Juno Jordan. The name Pythagoras is borrowed: the Pythagorean school left no method for turning names and birth dates into numbers. The numbers here are sums of digits; the meaning attached to each number is the system's convention.

How does numerology work out your Life Path and other numbers?
Numerology based on your name and birth date is a modern system. It took shape in the United States around the turn of the 20th century, through the books and classes of L. Dow Balliett, and was developed further by her student Juno Jordan. The name Pythagoras is borrowed: the Pythagorean school of ancient Greece saw number as the root of all things, but it left no method for turning names and birth dates into numbers like this.
Your Life Path Number comes from your birth date on the solar calendar. Add up all the digits, then keep adding until one digit is left. Born on 29/11/1992: 2+9+1+1+1+9+9+2 = 34, then 3+4 = 7. If you hit 11, 22 or 33 along the way, you stop there; these are called master numbers. Born on 9/8/1992, the digits add to 38, then 3+8 = 11, and 11 is kept.
Schools of numerology split on two points. Some reduce the day, month and year separately before adding them: for the same date, 9/8/1992, the year 1992 reduces to 3, then 9+8+3 = 20, which gives 2. Some keep only 11 and 22, and some reduce every master number to 2, 4 or 6. This tool adds the whole string at once and keeps 11, 22 and 33, so your number may differ from the one another site gives you.
The other three numbers come from your name. Each letter becomes a number, repeating every nine letters: A, J, S are 1; B, K, T are 2; C, L, U are 3; D, M, V are 4; E, N, W are 5; F, O, X are 6; G, P, Y are 7; H, Q, Z are 8; I, R are 9. The Expression Number adds every letter, the Soul Urge Number adds only the vowels A, E, I, O, U, and the Personality Number adds the consonants. Vietnamese names have their diacritics removed first (Đ becomes D, Ư becomes U), and Y is counted as a consonant; some books count Y as a vowel when it sounds like one, as in the name Vy.
The Pythagorean grid is the name now commonly used for a 3x3 chart that counts how many times each digit from 1 to 9 appears in your birth date. The date 29/11/1992 has three 1s, two 2s and three 9s, while 3 to 8 are missing; zeros are not counted. Numerology reads a crowded square as a strength and an empty one as something lacking.

What are the master numbers 11, 22 and 33?

Why does another site give me a different Life Path Number?
Usually because it adds differently. Some sites reduce the day, month and year separately before adding, and some do not keep master numbers. Both ways agree for most birth dates and only part ways on dates that touch a master number.
How do the Expression, Soul Urge and Personality Numbers differ?
All three use the same letter-to-number table. The Expression Number adds every letter of your full name, the Soul Urge Number only the vowels, and the Personality Number only the consonants.
Which name should I enter, and do diacritics matter?
Use your full birth name. With or without diacritics gives the same numbers, since they are removed before counting. Adding or dropping a middle name changes the three name numbers, while the Life Path Number depends only on your birth date.
What is the Personal Year Number?
It is the number for one particular year: add your birth day and month to the year you are looking at, then reduce to one digit, without keeping master numbers. Someone born on 29/11 looking at 2026: 2+9+1+1+2+0+2+6 = 23, then 2+3 = 5.
Is numerology backed by science?
No. No study has shown that these numbers can predict anyone's character or course in life. It is a symbolic system that took shape a little over a century ago.
