What energy do you carry: three layers from three traditions, and why they disagree
The question "what energy do I carry" has no single system that answers it. This page therefore answers in three separate layers, each labelled with its origin: the element of the day master in the Four Pillars, the sound element of the birth year, and Western numerology. The three are NOT merged into one conclusion, because they measure three different things in three different traditions.
The first layer is the day master's element. In Zi Ping astrology the stem of the day pillar stands for the person themselves, so this is the closest answer to the question above. A solar birth date is enough to derive the day pillar, with the caveat that the day pillar turns at 23:00 rather than midnight, so someone born after 23:00 carries the next day's stem and branch.
The second layer is the birth-year sound element, what Vietnamese people usually mean by their destiny element (Metal in the Sea, Fire in the Furnace, Wood of the Great Forest, and so on). This is where most of the confusion lives: the birth-year element USUALLY DIFFERS from the day master's element, and that is entirely normal. Neither is wrong; they are two calculations over two different inputs (one from the day pillar, one from the year pillar), so the page shows both and says plainly when they diverge.
The third layer is Western numerology: the Life Path number from the birth date, plus the numbers derived from the full name (Expression, Soul Urge). This layer comes from a completely different tradition and sits alongside the others only for comparison.
The name-derived numbers depend on a convention that no international source defines: how to handle Vietnamese diacritics in the Pythagorean letter table. This site's convention is stated in the result itself: strip every tone mark, fold ă and â to a, ê to e, ô and ơ to o, ư to u, and treat đ as d. Every Vietnamese numerology site must pick some such convention; the difference is that most never say which, so two sites produce two different numbers and the reader cannot tell why.
Birth time is optional, and the page distinguishes "time unknown" from "born at midnight". With no time entered, the chart has only three pillars (year, month, day), the element count runs over six characters instead of eight, and the hour pillar is excluded entirely. The result says so rather than quietly guessing an hour and presenting the output as complete, because an invented pillar would skew the very count the whole reading rests on.

Because they come from two different pillars: the sound element uses the YEAR's stem and branch, while the day master uses the DAY's stem. A mismatch is normal, not a sign that one of them is miscalculated.
Can I use this if I do not know my birth time?
Yes. With the birth time left blank the chart has only three pillars and the element count runs over six characters instead of eight; the result says so rather than guessing an hour. Adding a birth time gives a fuller chart.
How can a Vietnamese name with diacritics produce a numerology number?

No. Leaving the name blank still gives the day master element, the birth-year element and the Life Path number; only the Expression and Soul Urge numbers, which come from the letters of the name, are omitted.
