Where this comes from
The Bát Trạch school sorts directions by the Kua number, a figure computed from the lunar birth year and sex. Each Kua belongs to the East group or the West group, with four directions carrying good stars and four carrying bad stars by the school's table. Tradition ties the method to the Bazhai Mingjing; Nhật Nguyệt has not checked it against a specific edition.
Day and month are optional, used only to convert to the lunar year: anyone born between early January and about 20 February usually still belongs to the previous year.

What are the Kua number and Eight Mansions, and how do they give house directions?
Eight Mansions (Bát Trạch) is a feng shui school that reads directions from the occupant's birth year. From the lunar birth year and sex it works out a number called the Kua number, from 1 to 9, with no 5.
Each Kua number belongs to one of two groups, East or West. Each group has four good directions and four to avoid, and the good directions of one group are the bad ones of the other. Neither group is better.
The four good directions carry four stars, strongest first: Sinh Khí, Thiên Y, Diên Niên, Phục Vị. The four bad ones also carry stars, mildest first: Họa Hại, Lục Sát, Ngũ Quỷ, Tuyệt Mệnh. Followers of the school usually settle the front door first, then the stove and the bed.
The Kua number uses the lunar year. If you were born in January or early February, before Tết, you may belong to the previous lunar year; add your birth day and month and the page converts it for you.
A man and a woman born the same year usually get different Kua numbers, so a couple may suit two different sets of directions. A common way out is to set the door by the main earner and adjust the bed for the other partner.
Eight Mansions is only one school. Flying Star (Huyền Không) feng shui also weighs when the house was built and which way it actually sits, so it can reach a different verdict for the same house.

What do I need to look up my house directions?
Your birth year and sex. Add your birth day and month if you were born early in the Gregorian year, so the page gets the lunar year right. No birth hour is needed.
What is the difference between the East and West groups?
They suit opposite sets of directions: the good directions of one are the ones the other should avoid. Neither is better.
If husband and wife are in different groups, whose directions win?
A common approach is to set the front door by the main earner or the person home most, then choose bed and desk directions for the other. Being in different groups is no reason to give up a house you like.
Is the house direction measured from the door or the back?
Eight Mansions distinguishes the facing (where the house looks out, usually the front door) from the sitting side (its back). The table here gives good directions for the door, stove, bed and desk; to measure, stand inside and look straight out of the front door.
If I was born in January, which year sets my Kua number?

Is Eight Mansions the whole of feng shui?
