Where this comes from
Palmistry reads character from the lines of the palm and is long attested in India, China and Europe; how it spread between them is not securely documented. Schools disagree even on which hand to read; the suggestions here follow the Western manuals' practice of reading the dominant hand. The readings are Nhật Nguyệt's own and gentler than the old books; where the old books read differently, as with lifespan on the Life line, the reading says so.

Which palm lines are read, and how?
Palm reading draws character from the lines on the palm. It has a long history in India, China and Europe. Many books say it began in ancient India and spread from there, but there is no firm record of how it travelled.
There are three main lines. The heart line (Tâm Đạo) is the highest, running across just below the base of the fingers, and the head line (Trí Đạo) sits below it, crossing the middle of the palm. The life line (Sinh Đạo) curves around the fleshy base of the thumb, which palmists call the mount of Venus. Palmistry links the heart line to how you feel and show affection, the head line to how you think, and the life line to stamina and everyday energy.
Each line is read by its length, depth, whether it runs straight or curves, and whether it is unbroken or broken. A head line that curves down toward the mount of the Moon, the fleshy outer edge of the palm near the wrist, is read as a mind that works by association. A broken or branching heart line is read as a love life with several chapters, and palmistry does not treat it as a bad omen.
Schools disagree from the very first step: which hand to read. Western books usually read the dominant hand for who you are now and the other hand for what you were born with. In East Asia the folk saying is "left for men, right for women". The tip here follows the first approach, and two hands that differ are quite normal.

Look in daylight with the palm slightly cupped, because stretching the hand flat makes the lines look straighter and fainter than they are.

Should I read my left hand or my right?
It depends on the school. Western books usually read the dominant hand for the present and the other hand for what you were born with. East Asian folk practice follows "left for men, right for women".
