How Western astrology determines your zodiac sign

Western astrology originated in ancient Mesopotamia and Greece (around the 2nd century BCE, systematized in Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos), based on dividing the Sun's apparent yearly path across the sky (the ecliptic) into 12 equal 30-degree segments, named after the 12 constellations that lie along it. These are the familiar 12 zodiac signs (Aries, Taurus, Gemini...).

Your "Sun sign" (usually just called your "zodiac sign") is simply the segment where the Sun appeared to be at the moment you were born, derived directly from your solar birth date, which is why each sign's date range stays roughly fixed year to year (Aries is always around March 21-April 19). The 12 signs group into 4 elements (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) and 3 qualities (Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable), the basis for describing shared personality traits among signs in the same group.

One technical caveat: the constellations' actual positions in the sky have shifted noticeably from 2,000 years ago due to precession (Earth's slow axial wobble), so modern astrology ("tropical astrology", used by most tools including this one) calculates signs based on the Sun's position relative to a fixed equinox point, NOT the constellations' real current position ("sidereal astrology", used in Vedic/Indian astrology, which gives different dates). This is why the two systems can assign a different sign to the same birthday.

Like Tử Vi or any other form of astrology, Western astrology has no basis verified by empirical science (psychological studies have not found a systematically measurable link between zodiac sign and personality or fate). This tool provides personality descriptions and day-based readings using the common tropical system, meant as entertainment and cultural reference.

Each element groups 3 signs that skip every third position around the zodiac wheel: Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) is associated with energy and initiative, Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) with practicality and stability, Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) with communication and ideas, and Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) with emotion and intuition. The 3 qualities cut across the elements differently: Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) start each season and are associated with initiating action, Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) fall mid-season and are associated with persistence, and Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) end each season and are associated with adaptability.

Besides the Sun sign, a full astrological profile traditionally also considers the Moon sign (based on the Moon's position, said to reflect inner emotional life) and the Rising sign/Ascendant (based on which zodiac segment was on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place of birth, requiring a precise birth time and location). This tool focuses on the Sun sign alone, the most commonly referenced and easiest to calculate from just a birth date, rather than attempting a full natal chart.

The dividing dates between adjacent signs (the "cusps") can shift by a day or two from year to year because a solar year isn't an exact whole number of days; someone born within a day or two of a boundary date should treat their sign as approximate and, if precision matters to them, check the exact time of the equinox/solstice for their specific birth year.
