Where this comes from
Lunar dates and stems and branches are calendar computations. The selection combines three layers of convention: the twelve day officers and the two avoidance customs Tam Nương and Nguyệt Kỵ as almanacs print them; harmony, combination, clash and harm between the day's branch and the branches of the month by solar term and of the birth year; and the Universal Day number of numerology, a modern system. Combining the three without adding a score is a convention published by Nhật Nguyệt.

What does the day ranking actually look at?
You pick the task, enter your birth date and a date range of up to 62 days. Each day in the range is checked and marked at one of four levels: excellent, good, neutral or avoid. The days at the top level are listed separately at the head of the result, and each day comes with its reasons, factor by factor.
Three factors depend on the task. First, the good-day criteria of that task, the same set used by the Good Days This Month page: a Universal Day number (numerology) in the group that suits the kind of task is favourable, and a day branch that clashes with or harms the month's branch by solar term is unfavourable. Second, the day officer: the almanac lists what each officer suits and what it avoids, for example Định suits weddings and Khai avoids burials. Third, Tam Nương (lunar days 3, 7, 13, 18, 22, 27) and Nguyệt Kỵ (lunar days 5, 14, 23), two customs that avoid new undertakings and momentous matters.
Two factors depend on you: the day's branch against your birth-year branch (Tam Hợp and Lục Hợp are favourable; Tứ Hành Xung and Lục Hại are unfavourable), and the element of the day's branch against the nạp âm element of your birth year (generating or shared elements are favourable). The birth year is the lunar year: someone born on 20/1/1990, before the Canh Ngọ Tết, belongs to Kỷ Tỵ, Đại Lâm Mộc (Wood); someone born on 15/5/1990 is Canh Ngọ, Lộ Bàng Thổ (Earth).
The factors are not added into a score. A single unfavourable factor makes the day one to avoid. With none, the day is excellent when both the task side and your side are favourable, and good when one of them is. So for the same person and range, a wedding and a burial give two different lists.

Frequently asked questions
Does picking a different purpose change the ranking?
Yes. The good-day criteria and the reading of the day officer both follow the task you pick, so a wedding and a burial usually give two different lists. Marriage registration uses the same set as a wedding.
How is my destiny element worked out here?
It is the nạp âm element of your lunar birth year. The birth date is converted to the lunar calendar first, so someone born in January or early February, before Tết, belongs to the previous lunar year. The result states the year, the nạp âm element and the lunar year used.
Why is a day marked avoid even though it suits my age?
Because one unfavourable factor is enough. A Tam Nương or Nguyệt Kỵ day, a day whose officer avoids your task, or a day whose branch clashes with or harms the month's branch by solar term or your birth year is marked avoid, whatever the other factors say.
Why is the range capped at 62 days?
To keep the list short enough to compare. About two months is usually enough for one plan; for longer, look up one stretch at a time.
Are Tam Nương and Nguyệt Kỵ taken into account?
Yes. Tam Nương days (lunar 3, 7, 13, 18, 22, 27) and Nguyệt Kỵ days (lunar 5, 14, 23) are marked avoid for every task in the list, since each of them is a new undertaking or a momentous matter that these customs avoid.
Can I use this to pick a day for two people, such as a wedding?
This tool scores one person only. For a wedding, use the Wedding Date tool, which scores the bride and groom separately and takes the lower of the two.
Does "excellent" guarantee things will go well?
No. It is a ranking based on folk belief, not a forecast. Work schedules, weather and everyone's convenience still matter more.
