What is Thông Quan in BaZi?
Thông Quan (通關) literally means opening a pass or clearing the way. In BaZi, it refers to a situation where an element or Ten God acts as an intermediary, resolving the clash between two opposing sides in the chart. As a result, the Qi of the Five Elements flows smoothly instead of being blocked, making the chart more harmonious.
Why is Thông Quan important in chart interpretation?
When two elements in a chart clash strongly, such as Metal controlling Wood or Water controlling Fire, without an intermediary element, the chart can easily fall into a tense state, causing disadvantages in areas like health, career, and relationships. Thông Quan appears as a bridge, transforming the controlling relationship into a generating one, helping the useful god function and reducing adversity.
How is Thông Quan useful god understood?
The Thông Quan useful god is an element or Ten God chosen as the useful god due to its ability to resolve clashes. Typically, this element must be present in the chart or appear in the luck cycle to play its role. When interpreting, one considers whether the intermediary element is strong enough; if weak, its resolving effect is limited.
Distinguishing Thông Quan from easily confused concepts
Thông Quan differs from an ordinary useful god in that it focuses on resolving a specific clash, while the useful god is the necessary element to balance the entire chart. Thông Quan also differs from Qi Transformation, as Qi Transformation is a change in the nature of an element, whereas Thông Quan is merely a temporary bridge that helps Qi flow. Additionally, Thông Quan is not the same as Temperature Adjustment, which aims to adjust the climate in the chart.
Practical application of Thông Quan
In chart interpretation, when a chart has strong clashes, one often looks for an intermediary element to determine the Thông Quan useful god. If this element is strong and supported, the luck cycle may be smoother. Conversely, if the intermediary element is controlled or too weak, its resolving effect is reduced. This is traditional knowledge for reference, not scientifically verified.
