Bedroom Feng Shui: Bed Placement, Mirrors, and Color Choices

TL;DR: Bedroom feng shui centers on three key factors: bed placement (avoiding facing the door or sitting under a beam), limiting mirrors that reflect the bed directly, and choosing soft colors that support restful energy.

Why Bedroom Feng Shui Matters

In feng shui thinking, the bedroom is where people spend the most time resting and recovering energy after a long day. This space therefore needs to be arranged so that energy flow (qi) moves smoothly and steadily, avoiding factors that disturb sleep or affect mental wellbeing. The three most emphasized factors in bedroom feng shui are bed placement, mirrors, and overall color scheme.

Bed Placement

The "Commanding Position"

The most common principle is placing the bed where you can see the door from it, but not directly in line with it. The ideal spot is usually diagonal from the door, letting the sleeper feel safe and aware of the room without a direct flow of energy from the door hitting them while asleep, thought to cause unease and shallow sleep.

Avoid Placing the Bed Under a Beam

An exposed ceiling beam directly above the bed is believed to create invisible pressure on the person sleeping beneath it, potentially affecting health and mood over time. If the structure can't be changed, you can shift the bed out from directly under the beam, or install a drop ceiling to conceal it.

Headboard Against a Solid Wall

The headboard should rest against a solid, sturdy wall rather than being left open or placed right against a window, symbolizing support and stability in life. Avoid placing the bed directly under a large window or between two openings (a door and a window facing each other), since a through-draft of energy across the room can create a sense of unease during sleep.

Avoid the Foot of the Bed Facing the Door Directly

A bed positioned with its foot lined up directly facing the bedroom door is popularly called the "coffin position" in folk belief, considered one of the most inauspicious layouts because it evokes the image of a funeral procession. This is one of the most important things to avoid when arranging a bed.

Mirror Principles in the Bedroom

Mirrors deserve special attention in bedroom feng shui. Traditional belief holds that a mirror reflecting the bed directly can startle the sleeper, disrupt deep sleep, and even affect spiritual energy, since a mirror is thought to "duplicate" or reflect back unwanted energy during sleep, a state when a person is most vulnerable.

If the bedroom has a large mirror (a wardrobe mirror or vanity mirror), position it so it doesn't directly reflect the bed, or cover it with a curtain at night if it can't be moved.

Bedroom Colors

For color, bedroom feng shui generally favors soft, neutral tones that promote relaxation rather than stimulation: warm earth tones, beige, cream, pale blue, blush pink, or light gray are well regarded. Overly bright or vivid colors (bright red, neon orange) can work as accents but tend to make a resting space feel tense and harder to fall into deep sleep if used as the dominant tone. Specific color choices can also be weighed against the homeowner's Five Element type for added harmony.

A Few More Notes

Beyond these three main factors, bedroom feng shui also encourages limiting electronic devices (TVs, computers) in the room, believed to emit energy that disrupts sleep; keeping the space under the bed clear and free of clutter; and limiting thorny plants or too many plants in the bedroom, since some traditions hold that plants absorb oxygen at night, making them unsuitable for a resting space.

Frequently asked questions

Is a mirror facing the bed really bad?

In traditional feng shui belief, a mirror reflecting the bed directly is considered unfavorable, thought to cause a startled, shallow sleep. This is a folk belief offered as guidance; if the mirror can't be moved, a simple fix is covering it with a curtain or cloth at night.

If the bedroom is small and the bed can't avoid sitting under a beam, what can be done?

You can install a drop or false ceiling to conceal the beam, hang soft fabric drapery along it, or, if space allows, shift the bed even partially out from directly beneath it to reduce the sense of pressure.
