What are the 24 Mountain Directions?
The 24 Mountain Directions (二十四山) is a method of dividing the compass ring in feng shui into 24 equal parts, each spanning 15 degrees. The term "mountain" here does not only mean mountain but carries the meaning of "direction", while "direction" refers to the orientation of a structure. This system helps practitioners accurately determine the coordinates of houses, graves, and shops, then assess auspiciousness based on the five elements, eight trigrams, heavenly stems and earthly branches, and different feng shui schools.
Origin and structure
The 24 mountains are formed from the combination of 8 heavenly stems (excluding Wu and Ji), 12 earthly branches, and 4 trigrams Qian, Kun, Gen, and Xun. Each mountain has its own element, trigram, and degree range. For example, the Zi mountain is due north, belongs to the Water element, Kan trigram, and governs approximately 352.5 to 7.5 degrees; the Wu mountain is due south, Fire element, Li trigram, approximately 172.5 to 187.5 degrees. Other mountains such as Jia, Yi, Mao, Chen, Si, Bing, Ding, Wei, Shen, Geng, Xin, Xu, Hai, Ren, Gui, Chou, Yin, Qian, Kun, Gen, and Xun also have their own positions and characteristics.
Practical application
People use a feng shui compass (luopan) to measure directions. After determining the mountain of the sitting and facing, the practitioner combines it with the owner's fate, time cycles (e.g., Period 8, Period 9), and other factors such as landform and water methods to make assessments. Each mountain can carry different good or bad meanings depending on its combination with other mountains and timing. For instance, the Qian mountain belongs to the West Four Mansions, Metal element, representing heaven, father, and leader; the Shen mountain belongs to the Shen Zi Chen triple harmony, Water element, located in the Kun palace.
Distinguishing from easily confused terms
The 24 Mountain Directions are often confused with "eight mansions" (8 directions) or "eight trigrams" (8 trigrams). In fact, the 24 mountains are a more detailed system, dividing each trigram into 3 mountains. It also differs from "sitting and facing" (sitting is the position behind, facing is the front) and "dragon vein" (the flow of earthly energy). Understanding the 24 mountains correctly helps avoid confusion when measuring directions and making assessments.
