The Ooc Om Boc festival, also known as the Moon worship ceremony, is one of the most significant annual events for the Khmer people in Southern Vietnam. Deeply connected to wet-rice agriculture, it is a time to express gratitude to the Moon deity and other spirits for a bountiful harvest, while also serving as a vibrant community cultural space.
Origin and Timing
Held on the full moon night of the 10th lunar month, the festival marks the end of the harvest season. Soc Trang province, home to a large Khmer population, elevates the event to a provincial scale. According to TTXVN, the 2023 Ooc Om Boc and Ngo Boat Race festival in Soc Trang took place from November 25 to 27, 2023, aiming to honor traditional cultural values and meet the spiritual needs of the Khmer community.
The Spiritual Moon Offering
The Khmer believe the Moon deity influences weather and crop growth. During the ceremony, families prepare offerings placed under the moonlight, typically including young rice flakes (com dep) mixed with coconut and palm sugar, fruits, and other seasonal produce. After the offering, families share the food. Adults rub com dep on children's faces and hands, wishing them health and good luck for the coming year, strengthening family bonds.
The Ngo Boat Race: A Cultural Highlight
The Ngo boat race is the most dynamic and anticipated event. In Khmer culture, the Ngo boat holds deep spiritual significance; it is a sacred asset representing the pagoda and its community. Each Khmer pagoda often owns a Ngo boat for competitions, showcasing strength, unity, and communal pride.
These are long dugout canoes, ranging from 20 to over 30 meters, crafted from precious timber. Their bows are intricately carved with motifs of mythical creatures like the Naga serpent or Krud bird, painted in vibrant colors. A boat can carry 40 to over 50 paddlers, typically strong young men in traditional attire.
A Festive Atmosphere
On race day, crowds gather along riverbanks to cheer. The air fills with the sound of drums, gongs, and spectators' shouts. A helmsman leads the team, setting the rhythm for paddlers who move in perfect sync, creating a spectacular display of color and power on the water, all vying for the honor of their pagoda and village.
Cultural Value and Outreach
Beyond being a sporting event, the Ooc Om Boc festival is a symbol of community solidarity and a declaration of the unique Khmer cultural identity within Vietnam's diverse cultural landscape.
