What Are the Five Elements?
The Five Elements, Metal (Kim), Wood (Mộc), Water (Thủy), Fire (Hỏa), and Earth (Thổ), form an ancient Eastern doctrine describing five fundamental types of energy that make up everything in the universe. Each person, based on their birth year according to the sexagenary (Can Chi) calendar, is considered to carry an "element" belonging to one of these five. The Five Elements doctrine isn't limited to home feng shui, it extends into many aspects of life, including choosing colors and career direction in harmony with one's element.
The Generating and Controlling Cycles
Before looking at each element specifically, it helps to understand two foundational cycles:
- Generating cycle (mutual support and nourishment): Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal, Metal generates Water, Water generates Wood.
- Controlling cycle (mutual restraint and conflict): Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal, Metal controls Wood.
When choosing colors or a career, people typically favor their own element's colors/industries as well as those of the element that "generates" theirs, while limiting colors/industries belonging to the element that "controls" theirs.

Metal Element
Favorable colors: white, gray, silver, metallic tones (own element); yellow, earthy brown (Earth generates Metal).
Suited industries: finance and banking, law, jewelry, mechanical engineering, hardware/component manufacturing, mining.
Wood Element
Favorable colors: green (own element); blue, black (Water generates Wood).
Suited industries: education and training, publishing and journalism, agriculture and forestry, fashion and textiles, furniture and interiors, farming.
Water Element
Favorable colors: blue, black, navy (own element); white, gray, silver (Metal generates Water).
Suited industries: trade and import-export, transport and logistics, travel and tourism, media and journalism, beverages and seafood.
Fire Element
Favorable colors: red, orange, pink, purple (own element); green (Wood generates Fire).

Earth Element
Favorable colors: yellow, earthy brown, terracotta (own element); red, orange, pink, purple (Fire generates Earth).

In practice, applying the Five Elements to color and career often shows up in simple choices: picking a dominant color for clothing, a workspace, a brand logo, or even a wallet or car color to match one's element. For career, the Five Elements doctrine is usually treated as an additional reference alongside personal interest, ability, and practical circumstances, helping guide a choice that feels more confident and "in tune with nature," rather than serving as the sole deciding factor.
A Note on Application
One thing worth noting is that Five Elements doctrine has many variants and interpretations depending on the school of thought, and determining a person's element (based on the Nayin/sound-element of their sexagenary birth year) is fairly complex, not simply a matter of looking at the Gregorian birth year. So if you want to know your Five Element accurately, it's best to consult a traditional Nayin lookup table or a dedicated calculation tool, rather than guessing intuitively.
