TL;DR: Hung Kings Worship is a unique spiritual cultural practice of the Vietnamese people, embodying the tradition of 'Remembering the source when drinking water'. In 2012, UNESCO officially inscribed this belief as a Representative Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, affirming its global value in connecting communities.

Hung Kings' Death Anniversary: From Legend to World Heritage

Hung Kings Worship is not merely a commemorative ritual but a profound system of cultural and spiritual practices, reflecting the philosophy of life and the enduring aspirations of the Vietnamese nation. UNESCO's official inscription of 'Hung Kings Worship in Phu Tho' as a Representative Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2012 elevated this belief from a national scope to the international arena, affirming the universal values of a distinctive cultural phenomenon.

Origins and Historical Significance of Worshipping the National Ancestors

According to legends and official history, the Hung Kings were the founders of Van Lang, the first proto-state of the Vietnamese people. The worship of the Hung Kings originated very early, associated with Nghia Linh Mountain (Hy Cuong commune, Viet Tri city, Phu Tho province), considered the center of the nation at that time. Ancient Vietnamese believed that the Hung Kings were not only political and military leaders but also cultural heroes who laid the foundation for customs, practices, occupations, and community lifestyles.

The formation of this belief was a long historical process. It began with the worship of those who had merits for their villages and country, following the Vietnamese tradition of 'Remembering the source when drinking water'. Gradually, the worship was systematized and standardized into a national ceremony. Vietnamese feudal dynasties, from Dinh, Ly, Tran, Le to Nguyen, all had policies to honor, build, and expand the scale of the Hung Temple. This shows that Hung Kings Worship is not a spontaneous phenomenon but the result of cultural integration and national consciousness over thousands of years.

Nature and Operational Mechanism of the Belief

Unlike ancestral worship within the family or clan, Hung Kings Worship carries a profound communal and national character. It expands the concept of 'ancestors' to the entire nation. The Hung Kings are considered the 'Ancestors' of the entire Vietnamese people, so every Vietnamese citizen, regardless of region, can consider themselves descendants of the Hung Kings.

The operational mechanism of this belief is based on a system of relics and rituals. According to Phu Tho province statistics, there are 345 relics associated with Hung Kings Worship in the province. Among them, the Hung Temple Historical Site is classified as a special national relic. Nationwide, this number reaches 1,417 relics worshipping the Hung Kings, their wives, children, and generals of the Hung Vuong era. These relics are not only places for rituals but also 'historical witnesses', sacred spaces connecting the present generation with the glorious past.

The center of the belief is the Hung Kings' Death Anniversary, held annually on the 10th day of the third lunar month at the Hung Temple. This ritual is performed solemnly and respectfully, following traditional procedures preserved through many generations. Alongside the ritual, the festival with folk games and cultural and artistic activities creates an atmosphere both sacred and vibrant, attracting millions of people from all over the country and overseas Vietnamese.

Symbolic Values and Community Connecting Power

The core and overarching value of Hung Kings Worship is connection. It connects people with their national roots and connects generations in a continuous historical flow. When participating in the ritual, each citizen not only fulfills a spiritual duty but also becomes aware of their place in the vast national community.

The art program 'Sacred Origins - Hung Kings' Ancestral Land' held on the evening of April 9, 2022 (i.e., 9/3 lunar calendar) on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of UNESCO recognition once again affirmed the role of this belief in the spiritual life of the Vietnamese. This event was not only an occasion to honor the unique folk cultural values of the Ancestral Land but also an opportunity to praise the spirit of solidarity and the tradition of 'Remembering the source when drinking water'.

Hung Kings Worship transcends the meaning of a mere spiritual activity (praying for national peace and favorable weather) to become an invisible but extremely strong bond, connecting the Vietnamese community domestically and abroad. It reminds everyone of their responsibility to the past, present, and future of the nation, thereby strengthening solidarity, love, and mutual support.

Preservation and Promotion of Heritage Values

UNESCO's recognition is a great honor but also places great responsibilities on Vietnam to protect and promote heritage values in the spirit of UNESCO's 2003 Convention. In the past 10 years (2012-2022), Phu Tho province, as the central locality of the heritage, has made significant efforts.

Specifically, the province has strengthened communication and promotion to raise awareness and capacity of the community, the cultural subjects, in preserving and promoting the unique values of the belief. The province has also mobilized resources to restore, renovate, and embellish the Hung Temple Historical Site and nearly 60 other Hung King worship relics in the area. The provincial-level classification of historical and cultural relics for 25 Hung King worship sites and characters from the Hung Vuong era during this period was also an important step in systematizing and managing the heritage.

In addition to preserving tangible values, the preservation of intangible values such as sacrificial rituals, folk songs, folk dances, and related customs has also been emphasized. The annual organization of the Hung Kings' Death Anniversary at the Hung Temple and in villages and communes worshipping the Hung Kings in the province is always carried out solemnly, respectfully, and in accordance with traditional rituals, contributing to the protection of the core values of the heritage.

Hung Kings Worship in the Modern Flow

In the context of modern society with many changes, Hung Kings Worship still maintains its vitality. Not only is it a spiritual destination for millions of pilgrims each festival season, but this belief is also seen as a soft resource for tourism development and promoting Vietnamese culture to the world.

The coordination between Phu Tho province and central ministries and agencies in implementing commitments to UNESCO has created a model for managing and protecting intangible cultural heritage in Vietnam. These efforts go beyond preservation, aiming to 'revive' and spread the heritage values in the community, especially among the younger generation.

UNESCO's recognition has created positive pressure forcing authorities and people to re-evaluate and cherish their heritage. It also opens opportunities to compare, contrast, and learn from other countries in preserving intangible cultural heritage. Hung Kings Worship, with its profound humanistic values, will surely continue to be a living testament to the endurance of Vietnamese culture in the flow of human civilization.
