TL;DR: The wealth position is a corner believed to gather qi and keep wealth, and each method of finding it gives a different result. Bát Trạch uses the occupant's life trigram to find the Sinh Khí direction; Huyền Không uses the ruling star in the house's star chart (Period 9 runs from 2024 to 2043), so the wealth position changes with the period; the popular Minh tài vị method takes the corner diagonal to the main door. There is no single formula, so you need to know which system you are following.
What Is the Wealth Position and Why Are There Multiple Ways to Determine It?
The wealth position (財位, tài vị) is a feng shui term for the area believed to gather qi and retain wealth for the house. The concept does not come from a single original text but formed through several lineages of books, each stressing a different factor: one method looks only at the main door's location, one school looks at the occupant's life trigram, and another looks at flying stars and period qi. Therefore, the same house can yield different "wealth positions" depending on the reference system.
Dương trạch chỉ nam by Tưởng Đại Hồng opens with five key principles: examining trạch mệnh, trạch thể, sinh hướng, phụ bật, and opening the door to guide the path[1]. The fifth principle reads "第五开门引路诀,正卦装门莫偏泄": the door must sit on a proper trigram, without letting the qi leak off to one side[1]. The verses never use the term tài vị (財位).
On What Basis Does Bát Trạch Determine the Wealth Position?
Bát Trạch is a feng shui school founded on the relationship between the person's life trigram (mệnh quái, which Vietnamese books often call mệnh trạch or trạch mệnh) and the house's trigram (trạch quái). Each person has a life trigram calculated from birth year and gender; each house has a house trigram, usually taken from its sitting direction (the back of the house). From this, Bát Trạch divides the eight directions into four good ones: Sinh Khí, Thiên Y, Diên Niên, Phục Vị, and four bad ones: Tuyệt Mệnh, Ngũ Quỷ, Lục Sát, Họa Hại.
In this system, money is tied to the Sinh Khí direction. The book Phong thủy tài vượng by Trần Sinh and Minh Châu (2006) states: "The place for keeping money and the goods cabinet should also be in the Sinh Khí direction"[2]. The book also notes that on the Bát Trạch chart the sitting side is usually an auspicious direction (Phục Vị) while the facing side is mostly inauspicious, so the main door often falls in a bad position; to remedy this, the Bát Trạch school relies on the Du thần diagram and uses controlling relationships to reduce the harm[2].
The book gives an example: a person born in 1978 belongs to Tốn; for a house sitting southeast and facing northwest, the door cannot open to the northwest because that is Họa Hại, and only the north (Sinh Khí) can be chosen[2]. The example matches the school's table: for a Tốn life trigram, Sinh Khí is north, Thiên Y south, Diên Niên east, Phục Vị southeast, Họa Hại northwest, Lục Sát west, Ngũ Quỷ southwest, Tuyệt Mệnh northeast. Tốn is the life trigram of a man born in 1978; a woman born the same year is Khôn, with Sinh Khí in the northeast. So in the same house, two people with different life trigrams have different Sinh Khí directions.
Finding the wealth position by the corner diagonal to the main door, called Minh tài vị, is a separate method that does not use the life trigram. An article on VietNamNet dated 9 May 2026 says to stand inside the house looking out at the main door: if the door is offset to the left, the wealth position is the diagonal corner on the right; if it is offset to the right, the diagonal corner on the left; if the door is in the middle of the house, there are two wealth positions at the two diagonal corners[3]. The Sinh Khí direction of a life trigram may or may not coincide with that corner.
How Does Huyền Không Determine the Wealth Position by Flying Stars and Period Qi?
Huyền Không is a feng shui school based on the Hà Đồ, the Lạc Thư and the nine stars (cửu tinh) that fly with time. The book Tìm hiểu Cổ dịch Huyền không học by Hồ Kinh Quốc divides time into three eras and nine periods (tam nguyên cửu vận), each period lasting 20 years: 2004 to 2023 is Period 8 (Bát bạch), 2024 to 2043 is Period 9 (Cửu tử)[4]. A house's star chart is set by the period of construction (some use the move-in date) and by its sitting and facing. The chart has mountain stars (sơn tinh) and facing stars (hướng tinh); when the ruling star reaches both the sitting and the facing side, the chart is called "vượng sơn vượng hướng", also "đáo sơn đáo hướng"[4].
In the school's common understanding, the wealth position is the palace holding the ruling facing star (star 8 in Period 8, star 9 in Period 9), or the star of the next period. The ruling star changes when a new period begins, so the palace regarded as prosperous for wealth changes too; in addition, each year one star enters the centre and the other eight spread over the eight directions (lưu niên phi tinh)[4].
Points Where the Schools Disagree and How to Compare
There are at least three points of disagreement when determining the wealth position:
- Diagonal corner or life trigram: the Minh tài vị method looks only at the main door's location; Bát Trạch uses the occupant's life trigram to find the Sinh Khí direction. The two methods can give different results. Phong thủy tài vượng notes that the main schools in Vietnam and China, when examining directions, pay close attention to the owner's mệnh trạch[2].
- Fixed or changing: Bát Trạch ties the wealth position to the house and the occupant's life trigram, so it changes little. Huyền Không uses the period-based star chart of sitting and facing to judge good and bad, so the palace prosperous for wealth changes with the period.
- Role of objects: popular feng shui books often advise placing objects at the wealth position; Phong thủy tài vượng recommends a pot of plants with large round leaves in the corner opposite the living-room door[2]. Dương trạch chỉ nam discusses only qi, direction and doors, and says nothing about objects[1]. The editorial summary at the head of the Trạch kinh describes its method as dividing directions into twenty-four paths to examine good and bad fortune ("其法分二十四路考寻休咎")[5].
The table below summarizes the basic differences:
| Criterion | Bát Trạch | Huyền Không | Minh tài vị |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basis | Occupant's life trigram, house trigram | Period, sitting and facing, star chart | Main door location |
| Wealth position usually at | Sinh Khí direction | Palace with the ruling facing star (star 8 in Period 8, star 9 in Period 9) | Corner diagonal to the main door |
| Changes over time? | No, if the house and occupants stay the same | Changes with the period; annual flying stars are also considered | No, unless the door is moved |
| What you need | Birth year, gender, sitting direction | Construction year, sitting and facing measured by compass | Door location |
Should One Trust the Wealth Position Absolutely?
To date, no scientific research has proven a causal relationship between the wealth position and a family's wealth. Traditional feng shui documents only present rules and experience, without empirical evidence. Therefore, readers should view the wealth position as part of the culture of interacting with living space, not as a tool to guarantee finances. Keeping the house tidy, well-ventilated, and functionally reasonable remains the most practical factor.
Nhật Nguyệt's suggestion
To look up the wealth position of a home, first decide which method you are following. With Bát Trạch, you need the occupant's birth year and gender to calculate the life trigram. With Huyền Không, you need the period in which the house was built and its sitting and facing measured by compass. The Minh tài vị method needs only the main door's location.
