Scientific thinking and creative style
Lê Quý Đôn is evaluated as one of the pioneers of the thought of "thực học", emphasising the combination of theory and practice, and criticising the style of learning "tầm chương trích cú". He demonstrated the "positivist" method through travelling much, recording meticulously, and combining book knowledge with the realities of life.
His poetry and prose were evaluated by Phan Huy Chú through the work "Lịch triều hiến chương loại chí" as having "cốt cách trong sáng, lời văn hồn nhiên, trôi chảy dồi dào... thật là phong cách đại gia". His compositions, especially in Quế Đường Thi Tập, are mainly written in the seven-character eight-line Đường luật form with a masterful brush. Among them are poems exchanged between the Đại Việt envoy delegation (where he participated as Deputy Envoy) and the Joseon envoy delegation at Yên Kinh (present-day Bắc Kinh).
