Renunciation and founding of the Trúc Lâm Zen school
In the eighth month of the year Kỷ Hợi (1299), Emperor Trần Nhân Tông left the Thiên Trường palace to enter Yên Tử mountain to practice asceticism, taking the religious name Hương Vân Đại Đầu Đà. This event marked the birth of the Trúc Lâm Yên Tử Zen school. By establishing the Trúc Lâm school, he unified the previously existing Zen schools and the entire Buddhist Sangha of the Trần era into one.

Many artistic and religious works have been made to honor him, including the creation of statues of the Buddha Emperor. One of them is a statue made of Luy Lâu red ceramic, elaborately crafted by National Artisan and painter Nguyễn Đăng Vông. The statue depicts King Trần Nhân Tông taking off his imperial robe by a stream as he turned to the Buddha, and was ceremonially carried nearly 2,000km from Nam Định to the Trúc Lâm Chánh Giác Zen Monastery (Tiền Giang province) to be enshrined.
