See which of the day's 12 two-hour periods are auspicious and which are not. Add your birth date and what you plan to do, and each auspicious hour is rated for how well it suits you.
Where this comes from
The day's stem and branch are a calendar computation. Which hours count as auspicious is looked up from the day's branch, using the table of six branch pairs printed in almanacs in circulation. Starting Thanh Long from the day's branch and counting forward is set out in book 7 of the Xieji Bianfang Shu, and Tử Vi khảo luận lists the same six auspicious hours. It is a convention for choosing hours, not a measurement.

What no one has shown
No study has shown that acting in an auspicious hour changes the outcome. What can be checked is the day's stem and branch and that the table is applied correctly.

What are auspicious hours and how are they worked out?
The old reckoning splits day and night into 12 hours of two clock hours each, named after the earthly branches: Tý from 23:00 to 01:00, Sửu from 01:00 to 03:00, and so on to Hợi from 21:00 to 23:00. Of these 12, there are always 6 auspicious hours and 6 inauspicious ones.
Which hours are auspicious depends on the day's branch. Tý days and Ngọ days share one table, Sửu and Mùi days another, giving six pairs in all. So the Dần hour can be auspicious today and not tomorrow.
The Tý hour straddles midnight. The site turns the day at 00:00, so both parts of the Tý hour (00:00 to 01:00 and 23:00 to 24:00) are read from the table of the date you are viewing. Some texts start the new day at 23:00; if your plan falls between 23:00 and midnight, check the next day's table too.
Turn on "Find which hours suit me best" and each auspicious hour is rated on two points. First, the hour's branch against your birth-year branch: the same Tam Hợp group or a Lục Hợp pair is favourable, Tứ Hành Xung or Lục Hại means avoid. Second, the hour's element against yours: generating or shared elements are favourable. Inauspicious hours are not rated.
Your element here is the nạp âm element of your lunar birth year. The birth date is converted to the lunar calendar first, so someone born on 20/1/1990, before the Canh Ngọ Tết, belongs to the Kỷ Tỵ year, nạp âm Đại Lâm Mộc (Wood); someone born on 15/5/1990 is Canh Ngọ, Lộ Bàng Thổ (Earth). The birth-year branch follows the same lunar year. The purpose you pick, such as an opening or groundbreaking, only changes the accompanying tip, not the hour ratings.
| Hour (Branch) | Modern time range | Symbolic meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Tý | 11pm-1am | Deep night, when rats are most active |
| Sửu | 1am-3am | Late night, the buffalo chews cud before dawn |
| Dần | 3am-5am | Pre-dawn, when tigers hunt |
| Mão | 5am-7am | Early morning, which Chinese texts describe as when rabbits leave their burrow; the Vietnamese calendar calls this animal the Cat |
| Thìn | 7am-9am | Morning, the mythical dragon's hour for bringing rain |
| Tỵ | 9am-11am | Mid-morning, snakes rest in their den avoiding the sun |
| Ngọ | 11am-1pm | Midday, when horses are at their most energetic |
| Mùi | 1pm-3pm | Early afternoon, goats graze |
| Thân | 3pm-5pm | Late afternoon, monkeys are lively before dusk |
| Dậu | 5pm-7pm | Dusk, chickens return to roost |
| Tuất | 7pm-9pm | Early evening, dogs guard the house |
| Hợi | 9pm-11pm | Day's end, pigs sleep soundly |
Frequently asked questions
Are the auspicious hours the same every day?
No. Which hours are good depends on the day's branch, so the same two-hour slot can be auspicious one day and not the next.
How many auspicious hours does a day have?
Always 6 of the 12. Every day is the same in that respect; only which hours they are changes.
If something happens at 23:30, which day's table applies?
By the site's convention the day turns at 00:00, so 23:30 still belongs to the date you are viewing. Many date-selection texts treat 23:00 as the start of the next day, so for anything important in that hour, check both tables.
How is "hours that suit me" rated?
Each auspicious hour is checked by its branch against your birth-year branch and by its element against yours. Tứ Hành Xung or Lục Hại always means avoid; Tam Hợp or Lục Hợp together with a generating element is excellent; one favourable point is good; nothing either way is neutral.
Where does my element here come from?
It is the nạp âm element of your lunar birth year, the one people mean when they ask your age and destiny. Someone born in January or early February, before Tết, belongs to the previous lunar year: born 20/1/1990 is Kỷ Tỵ, Đại Lâm Mộc (Wood), not Canh Ngọ.
Are auspicious hours and auspicious days the same thing?
No. Auspicious hours rate the 12 hours of a day by the day's branch. An auspicious day is judged for the whole day by its day god (Thanh Long, Minh Đường and so on), which you can see in the How Is Today tool or on each lunar calendar day page.
Do auspicious hours have a scientific basis?
No. It is a handed-down folk convention, and the almanacs in circulation do not agree perfectly either.
