What does "which element and animal goes with a birth year" actually ask?

The question has two separate parts. The first is the zodiac animal of the birth year, from the 12-branch cycle of Earthly Branches (Địa Chi). The second is the destiny element, the nạp âm name of the birth year in the 60-year Can Chi cycle. The two do not depend on each other: the Earthly Branch repeats every 12 years and the nạp âm every 60, so two people with the same animal can still have different elements.

Someone born in 1984 (Giáp Tý) has the Tý animal and the nạp âm Hải Trung Kim; someone born in 2020 (Canh Tý) also has the Tý animal but the nạp âm Bích Thượng Thổ. Within one 60-year cycle the Tý animal has five elements: Hải Trung Kim (Giáp Tý), Giản Hạ Thủy (Bính Tý), Tích Lịch Hỏa (Mậu Tý), Bích Thượng Thổ (Canh Tý), Tang Đố Mộc (Nhâm Tý).

The two tables below follow the Lục Thập Hoa Giáp, one 60-year cycle each. The column "Lunar year begins" gives the date of Tết, the first day of the first lunar month of that year, in the Vietnamese lunar calendar (UTC+7). Anyone born in that calendar year but before that date still belongs to the previous Can Chi year by lunar age.

Why does one zodiac animal have several elements?

The animal cycle uses only the 12 Earthly Branches, while nạp âm uses all 60 Can Chi pairs. Since 60 is divisible by 12, each animal appears exactly five times in a 60-year cycle, each time with a different stem and a different nạp âm name. In the Vietnamese zodiac the Cat takes the place of the Rabbit, so Mão years are Cat years.

Shao Weihua (Thiệu Vĩ Hoa) presents the sixty-jiazi nạp âm table with every two consecutive years forming one row and one destiny; for example, people born in 1924, 1984 (Giáp Tý) and 1925, 1985 (Ất Sửu) all have the Hải Trung Kim destiny^[1]. He himself writes that the ancients discussed the principle behind the table but gave no basis for it and did not explain it clearly^[1].

What is nạp âm and where does it come from?

Nạp âm is the rule that assigns a Five Elements name to each Can Chi pair in the 60-year cycle. Names such as Hải Trung Kim, Lư Trung Hỏa and Đại Lâm Mộc are concrete images (gold in the sea, fire in the furnace, wood of the great forest), not the abstract names of the five elements.

Shen Kuo (Thẩm Quát, 1031 to 1095), in volume 5 (Music and Pitch) of the Dream Pool Essays (Mộng Khê bút đàm), explains the nạp âm of the sixty jiazi as one pitch-pipe holding five notes, "same kind takes a wife, eight apart begets a child", tying nạp âm to the twelve pitch pipes^[2]. In the early Qing, Huang Zongxi (Hoàng Tông Hy) wrote in his Treatise on the Images and Numbers of the Changes that although nạp âm is the same, "there are three ways of setting up the rule", and pointed out where those ways fail to agree^[3]. Even in classical scholarship, there was never a single answer to how the nạp âm table was built.

Does the Can Chi year change at Tết or at Lập Xuân?

There are two boundaries, depending on the purpose. Lunar age in folk usage, and the Can Chi year on the lunar calendar, change at Tết, the first day of the first lunar month. Bát Tự changes its year pillar at Lập Xuân (Start of Spring), the first solar term of spring. Taking Lập Xuân as the year boundary is a convention of the Bát Tự school, not a rule for every system.

Take 1996: Lập Xuân fell on the evening of 4 February, while Tết of Bính Tý was 19 February. Someone born on 10 February 1996 is still Ất Hợi by lunar age (that day is the 22nd day of the 12th lunar month of Ất Hợi), but Bát Tự already gives a Bính Tý year pillar because Lập Xuân has passed. Someone born on 20 January 1996 is Ất Hợi either way.

The gap between the two boundaries changes every year, since Tết follows the moon and Lập Xuân follows the sun's position:

So anyone born in January or February should look up the Tết date of the birth year in the last column of the lookup table, and know whether the question is about lunar age or Bát Tự.

Is the nạp âm element the same as the "destiny" used in Tử Vi?

Not quite. Two things that are both called "mệnh" need to be told apart.

• Year destiny (niên mệnh, the nạp âm element): the destiny name tied to the birth year, such as Hải Trung Kim or Sơn Hạ Hỏa. This is what the question "which element is my birth year" asks about; everyone born in the same year shares it.
• The Cục in Tử Vi: a different concept, used to place the Tử Vi star and set the Đại Vận milestones. The Cục depends on the position of the Mệnh palace and the Heavenly Stem of the birth year, so two people born in the same year can still have different Cục. There are five Cục: Thủy nhị Cục, Mộc tam Cục, Kim tứ Cục, Thổ ngũ Cục, Hỏa lục Cục.

When two sources give two different "destinies" for the same person, very likely one is giving the year destiny and the other the Cục.

How to use the table, and points to watch

• Find the Can Chi year of the birth year. By lunar age, compare the birth date with the Tết date in the last column; by Bát Tự, compare it with the Lập Xuân date.
• Read the Animal and Nạp âm columns on that row.
• To know the element (Kim, Mộc, Thủy, Hỏa, Thổ), take the last word of the nạp âm name: Hải Trung Kim is Kim, Đại Lâm Mộc is Mộc.
• For a Tử Vi chart, the Mệnh palace is also needed to find the Cục; the year destiny does not replace the Cục.

In folk usage, the year destiny is often used to talk about compatible ages and to choose a year to marry or have a child: two year destinies in a generating relation are seen as favorable, two in an overcoming relation as unfavorable. This is an oral saying, not a verified conclusion; even Bát Tự and Tử Vi books also use the stems and branches of the month, day and hour of birth, the Mệnh palace and the Đại Vận rather than stopping at one pair of elements.

The table answers exactly two questions: which animal a birth year has, and what the nạp âm destiny of that year is called. Any wider reading about character, life phases or compatibility belongs to the interpretive layer of each system.
