What is a natal chart and what does it consist of?
A natal chart (also called an astrological chart) is a circular diagram that records the positions of the Sun, the Moon and the planets of the Solar System at the exact moment and place a person was born. On that diagram, the outer ring holds the 12 zodiac signs, the inner ring holds the 12 houses, together with important angles such as the Ascendant and the Midheaven.
In Western astrology, each planet stands for a field of energy (the Sun for the ego, the Moon for emotions, Mercury for thought), each zodiac sign colours the style of expression, and each house points to an area of life such as family (the 4th house), career (the 10th house) or the subconscious (the 12th house).
Why do people born on the same day have different natal charts?
The Sun sign (commonly called the zodiac sign) is only one small piece of a natal chart. Because the Moon moves quickly, spending only about two to three days in each sign, two people born on the same day but at different hours can have different Moon signs. In the same way, the Ascendant changes about every two hours, so the more precise the birth time, the more accurate the natal chart. On top of that, the positions of the houses also depend on the latitude and longitude of the place of birth.
Distinguishing a natal chart from easily confused terms
A natal chart differs from "zodiac sign" in the everyday sense: a zodiac sign is merely one of 12 divisions along the ecliptic, whereas a natal chart is the whole diagram with planets, houses and angles. A natal chart also differs from Tử Vi (Vietnamese astrology) in the Eastern tradition, which rests on the stem-and-branch calendar, the 12 earthly-branch palaces and stars such as Tử Vi and Thiên Cơ. The two systems use different data and different methods of interpretation, and should not be equated.
How a natal chart is used in practice
An interpreter usually starts from three elements: the Sun sign (core nature), the Moon sign (emotional life) and the Ascendant (how one presents outwardly). They then look at which planet sits in which house, the aspects between them, and only then piece together the overall picture. Reading a natal chart requires synthesising many layers of information rather than simply looking up one sign.
The natal chart belongs to the field of astrology and the occult. It is for reference and has not been verified by science. It should be seen as a tool for self-reflection, not a substitute for medical, financial or legal advice.

- Traditional Western astrology: The natal chart is interpreted mainly through the positions of the planets in the 12 houses and their aspects, with an emphasis on fate and on life events that can be forecast.
