What is a natal chart and what does it contain?
A natal chart (also called a birth chart) is a circular diagram recording the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets at the exact moment and place of a person's birth. The outer ring shows the 12 zodiac signs, the inner ring shows the 12 houses, and key angles such as the Ascendant and Midheaven are marked.
In Western astrology, each planet represents a field of energy (the Sun for identity, the Moon for emotion, Mercury for thinking), each zodiac sign colors the style of expression, and each house points to a life area such as family (4th house), career (10th house), or the subconscious (12th house).
Why do people born on the same day have different charts?
The Sun sign (commonly called the zodiac sign) is only a small piece of the chart. Because the Moon moves quickly, spending only about two to three days in each sign, two people born on the same day at different times can have different Moon signs. Likewise, the Ascendant changes roughly every two hours, so the more accurate the birth time, the more precise the chart. The positions of the houses also depend on the latitude and longitude of the birthplace.
Distinguishing a natal chart from easily confused terms
A natal chart differs from "zodiac sign" in the everyday sense: the zodiac signs are just 12 divisions along the ecliptic, while a natal chart is the whole diagram with planets, houses, and angles. It also differs from Eastern "tu vi," which relies on the sexagenary calendar, 12 earthly branches, and stars such as Tu Vi and Thien Co. The two systems use different data and methods of interpretation and should not be equated.
How a natal chart is used in practice
Readers often start with three elements: the Sun sign (core nature), the Moon sign (emotional life), and the Ascendant (outward style). They then look at which house each planet occupies, the aspects between them, and only then assemble the overall picture. Reading a chart requires synthesizing many layers rather than looking up a single sign.
The natal chart belongs to astrology and esoteric tradition, is for reference, and has not been verified by science. It should be seen as a tool for self-reflection, not a substitute for medical, financial, or legal advice.
