A Sun Sign is the zodiac sign that the Sun occupied at the moment of your birth, according to Western astrology. When you read a daily horoscope and identify as an Aries, Taurus, or Gemini, you are referring to your Sun Sign – the most popular concept in Western astrology.
The Astronomical Basis
The zodiac is an imaginary band in the sky through which the Sun appears to travel over a year, as seen from Earth. This discrepancy arises from precession – the slow wobble of Earth's axis over a 26,000-year cycle. This wobble shifts the equinox and solstice points against the background stars. About 2,000 years ago, at the June solstice, the Sun sat between Gemini and Cancer. Today, on the same solstice, the Sun is between Gemini and Taurus. By the year 4609, it will leave Taurus for Aries.
The cumulative shift after 2,000 years is about 30 degrees – the width of one zodiac sign. Therefore, Sun Signs and astronomical constellations currently differ by about one month. In another 2,000 years, the gap will be two months.
The Case of Ophiuchus
In 1930, the International Astronomical Union redefined modern constellation boundaries. There are now 13 constellations along the Sun's path, not 12. The 13th is Ophiuchus, lying between Sagittarius and Scorpius. However, Ophiuchus is excluded from the traditional 12-sign Western zodiac.
