TL;DR: The first day of Lunar New Year 2027, the Year of the Goat, is Saturday, February 6, 2027. Under the Ministry of Home Affairs proposal, public employees would get 7 consecutive days off, from Thursday, February 4, 2027 (the 28th day of the twelfth lunar month of the Year of the Horse) through Wednesday, February 10, 2027 (the 5th day of the first lunar month of the Year of the Goat). This is a proposed plan, not an official schedule, so workers should wait for the Government's final decision.

When does Lunar New Year 2027 fall on the solar calendar?

The first day of Lunar New Year 2027, the Year of the Goat, is Saturday, February 6, 2027. The 30th day of the twelfth lunar month of the Year of the Horse, the last day of the old year, is Friday, February 5, 2027. The entire holiday period therefore falls within February on the solar calendar, well after the midpoint of the solar year, meaning the holiday arrives later than the multi-year average.

Determining the first day of Tet is not based on any fixed arithmetic rule of the solar calendar, but on the East Asian lunisolar calendar. This is a common point of confusion, so the section below explains the mechanism.

Why does Lunar New Year 2027 fall in early February?

The date of Lunar New Year is the result of the lunisolar calendar, not a purely lunar one. The key point is that the twelfth lunar month of the Year of the Horse 2026 has 30 days, and the first lunar month of the Year of the Goat 2027 begins exactly on the new moon day, the day of astronomical conjunction between the Moon and the Sun in celestial longitude.

In other words, the first day of Tet is always the new moon day of the first lunar month, calculated in Vietnam time (UTC+7). If the conjunction point falls in the latter half of the day in Vietnam time, the new month begins one day later than elsewhere. This is also why in some years the Tet calendars of Vietnam and China differ by one day.

In addition, the lunisolar calendar must insert a leap month to keep the first lunar month from drifting too far from the spring solar terms. The common rule is that if a lunar year has 13 months and no month contains a major solar term, the first month falling into that case is marked as the leap month. This mechanism makes Tet fluctuate between roughly January 21 and roughly February 20 on the solar calendar. Tet 2027 falls on February 6, in the middle of that range, not unusually late.

How many days off are proposed for Lunar New Year 2027?

According to the plan submitted by the Ministry of Home Affairs to the Government, public employees are expected to receive 7 consecutive days off for Lunar New Year 2027. The holiday begins on Thursday, February 4, 2027, the 28th day of the twelfth lunar month of the Year of the Horse, and ends on Wednesday, February 10, 2027, the 5th day of the first lunar month of the Year of the Goat.

The calculation is as follows: workers get 5 days off under the Labor Code, comprising 2 days before Tet and 3 days after Tet. Because 2 weekly rest days coincide with Tet holidays, workers get 2 compensatory days off. That adds up to 7 consecutive days.

It must be stressed that this is a proposed plan in the submission, not an officially issued holiday schedule. Readers should follow the Government's final document before planning to buy train or bus tickets or book travel.

Are there other proposed schedules for Lunar New Year 2027?

Yes. Before choosing the 7-day option, the Ministry of Home Affairs consulted on two options for ministries and sectors to consider. Option 2 would last 10 consecutive days, from Friday, February 5, 2027 (the 29th day of the twelfth lunar month of the Year of the Horse) through Sunday, February 14, 2027 (the 9th day of the first lunar month of the Year of the Goat). This option consists of 5 Tet holiday days under regulations, 2 compensatory days for weekly rest days, 1 swapped day off, and 2 weekly rest days.

The core difference between the two options is whether working days are swapped. Option 1 does not swap the calendar and gives 7 consecutive days off. Option 2 swaps the working day of Friday, February 12, 2027 with the weekly rest day of Saturday, February 27, 2027, extending the holiday but requiring make-up work after Tet.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued a document agreeing to choose Option 1, meaning 7 consecutive days off with no calendar swap. This signals that the 7-day option is likely to be chosen, but the final decision still rests with the Government.

How do business-sector workers get Tet 2027 off?

Workers in the business sector, who are not public employees, do not follow one fixed holiday schedule. Based on actual conditions, employers may proactively choose a suitable Tet holiday plan, provided it ensures the full 5 days required by regulations.

Specifically, businesses can choose one of two approaches. The first is to take 1 day off at the end of the Year of the Horse and 4 days at the start of the Year of the Goat. The second is to take 2 days off at the end of the Year of the Horse and 3 days at the start of the Year of the Goat. The Ministry of Home Affairs also requests that employers notify workers of the Tet holiday plan at least 30 days before implementing it.

One point to note is that this discretion does not mean businesses can cut holiday days. Whichever approach is chosen, the total number of Tet holiday days under regulations must still be 5.

What does the Year of the Goat and the Goat year mean in the stem-branch calendar?

2027 is the Year of the Goat in the stem-branch system. The stem Ding belongs to the Fire element, and the branch Wei belongs to the Earth element. In the 12-animal zodiac system, the Goat is the eighth position. In the 10-stem system, Ding is the fourth position.

One thing should be made clear before going into interpretation: this is a system of symbols used to number and classify time, not a verified forecasting mechanism. Different schools interpret it differently. This article follows the presentation common in Vietnamese folk culture and stem-branch documents, while noting that there is no complete consensus on the meaning of destiny among the schools.

The position of the Goat branch in the 12-animal zodiac

The Goat is the eighth branch in the 12-animal cycle, after the Horse and before the Monkey. In the earthly branch system, the Goat belongs to the Earth element, carrying the characteristics of dry soil, mound soil, and cemetery soil according to the classification of some documents. The Goat belongs to the group of four tombs along with the Dragon, Dog, and Ox, and to the three-combination group of Pig, Rabbit, and Goat.

In folk culture, the goat is associated with gentleness, diligence, herd living, and a preference for mild climates. This is a layer of cultural symbolism, not a biological trait used to infer human personality.

The Goat year and recent Goat years

To help readers compare, the table below lists recent Goat years in the stem-branch cycle. The full stem-branch cycle is 60 years, so the Goat year repeats after 60 years.

1991Metal GoatMetalGoat
2003Water GoatWaterGoat
2015Wood GoatWoodGoat
2027Fire GoatFireGoat
2039Earth GoatEarthGoat

The table shows that consecutive Goat years are 12 years apart, and every 5 Goat years the stem cycles back. The most recent Goat year before 2027 was 1967.

How different schools interpret the Goat year

There are at least three common approaches. The first is the approach of horoscopy and four pillars, which emphasizes stem-branch combinations, the generating and overcoming relationships of the five elements, and the relationship between the year and the specific month, day, and hour of birth of each person. This approach does not give a general conclusion for the whole year, but depends on each individual's chart.

The second is the folk feng shui approach, which often links the Goat year to directions, colors, and numbers according to the five elements of the stem and branch. This approach is common in daily life but lacks consistent basis across documents.

The third is the cultural approach, viewing the Goat year as an occasion to reflect on values associated with the image of the goat in folk songs, proverbs, and agricultural life. This approach does not offer predictions.

Readers should clearly distinguish these three approaches to avoid confusing a time-classification system with a prediction about destiny.

What is different about Lunar New Year 2027 in terms of weather and travel?

Because the first day of Tet falls on February 6 on the solar calendar, Tet 2027 falls in the middle of the dry season in the South and is still quite cold in the North. This is a favorable period for domestic travel because northern weather is often still chilly but has less drizzle than late January.

On the management side, the Ministry of Home Affairs states that the purpose of the long holiday plan is to give people working far from home and those doing business far away more time to travel, prepare, and celebrate Tet, while ensuring compatibility with the operational requirements of agencies and units. This explains why Tet holiday plans are often weighed between workers' need for rest and the continuous operation requirements of the administrative apparatus and public services.

What should be monitored before finalizing Tet 2027 plans?

The most important thing is to distinguish between the proposed plan and the official holiday schedule. All information in this article is based on the submission and statements at the Ministry of Home Affairs press conference, along with comments from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The official holiday schedule only takes effect after the Government issues a decision document.

For business-sector workers, it is necessary to wait for the employer's notice, which under regulations must be given at least 30 days in advance. For those planning to buy train or bus tickets or book travel, they should choose options that can be changed or canceled until the official schedule is announced.

As for the stem-branch meaning of the Goat year, it should be viewed as a layer of cultural information to better understand how Vietnamese people name and divide time, not as the sole basis for major decisions about finance, health, or marriage.
