Đặng Thái Sơn

Artist

Classical concert pianist, first Asian winner of the International Chopin Piano Competition (1980)

Early Life and Education

Đặng Thái Sơn was born on 2 July 1958 in Hanoi, into a family with a deep artistic tradition. His father, Đặng Đình Hưng, was a poet and composer, while his mother, People's Artist Thái Thị Liên, was a celebrated concert pianist and piano teacher, and one of the founders of the Vietnam School of Music (now the Vietnam National Academy of Music). He began learning piano as a child directly under his mother's guidance at the Hanoi Conservatory, amid wartime evacuations from the city. In the mid-1970s he moved to the Soviet Union to study at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow under professors Vladimir Natanson and Dmitry Bashkirov.

Career

The defining moment of Đặng Thái Sơn's career came in October 1980, when he won First Prize at the 10th International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland, becoming the first Asian pianist in the competition's history to take First Prize. In 1984, at age 26, he was awarded the title of People's Artist by the Vietnamese state, making him the youngest recipient of that honor at the time, along with a First Class Labor Order. He subsequently taught at the Kunitachi College of Music in Tokyo, Japan, from 1983 to 1987, before relocating to Montreal, Canada in 1991, where he became a piano professor at the Université de Montréal for roughly two decades. He has continued to perform at major concert halls worldwide, including Lincoln Center, the Barbican Centre, and the Sydney Opera House, and since 2005 has served as the first East Asian judge of the International Chopin Piano Competition, returning as a juror in 2010, 2015, 2021, and 2025. Several of his students have gone on to win top prizes at the Chopin Competition itself, including Bruce Liu (First Prize, 2021) and Eric Lu.

Personal Life

Đặng Thái Sơn has remained single and has never married. In one interview, when asked why he never started a family, he reflected on his life choices: life involves trade-offs, and having already gained so much through his art, he accepted the cost, noting that pursuing marriage without genuine happiness "brings suffering to myself and others." He holds dual Vietnamese and Canadian citizenship (naturalized in Canada in 1995) and, since 2020, has continued teaching at the New England Conservatory in the United States.

Numerology vs. reality

Life Path 5 (freedom, exploration, breadth of experience) fits his decades of international touring since winning the 1980 Chopin Competition. But the number's typical weakness ("struggles with long-term commitment") clearly does NOT fit, he has stayed devoted to one instrument and one career for over 40 years, a reminder that the number suggests tendencies, not guaranteed outcomes.
