Career beginnings
Sơn Tùng M-TP, real name Nguyễn Thanh Tùng, was born on 5 July 1994 in Thái Bình city, Thái Bình province. From a young age he learned to play the organ at the Thái Bình provincial Children's Cultural Palace. In 2009, he and his classmates formed the band Over Band, then he joined the hip-hop group Young Pilots and took the stage name M-TP. In 2012, he passed the entrance exam to the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music and signed a 5-year contract with Văn Production, officially changing his stage name to Sơn Tùng M-TP.
Why is his path from Thái Bình to V-pop noteworthy?
At the time he started, V-pop did not have many young figures who wrote their own songs and shaped their own style while still in school. The fact that someone from a provincial background rose through products posted on online music platforms shows the shift of an entire generation of Vietnamese artists into the digital environment. That path also shows that amateur school bands, such as Over Band and Young Pilots, can be a practical stepping stone for those who later pursue the profession professionally.
Success and influence
The turning point came in August 2011 when the song "Cơn mưa ngang qua" was released on Zing MP3 and within two months reached 1.7 million listens, helping him win the Favorite Song award and the Zing Music Awards in the R&B Song category. In the 2013-2014 period, the songs "Em của ngày hôm qua" and "Chắc ai đó sẽ về" made him a phenomenon of young music. In 2014, he starred in the film "Chàng trai năm ấy" and received the Golden Kite award for Promising Young Actor. At the end of 2016, he founded the company M-TP Entertainment. In 2017, the compilation "m-tp M-TP" was released with the hits "Lạc trôi" and "Nơi này có anh". In 2018, "Chạy ngay đi" helped him become the first V-pop singer to reach 3 million YouTube followers.
What do the international and domestic awards say?
These awards mark two different directions of recognition. Domestically, the Golden Kite Award and the Dedication Award recognized him in two different fields, acting and music, showing that his activity is not confined to one role. At the regional and international level, the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Southeast Asian Artist and the Mnet Asian Music Award for Vietnamese Breakthrough Artist are rare milestones for a V-pop artist at that time, because these award systems did not often give awards to Vietnamese artists.
Recent milestones
In 2019, he collaborated with Snoop Dogg on the song "Hãy trao cho anh" and organized the Sky Tour. In 2020, the documentary "Sky Tour Movie" was released on Netflix in 190 countries. In 2021, "Muộn rồi mà sao còn" entered the Billboard Global Excl. US chart. In 2022, he received YouTube's Diamond button when he reached 10 million subscribers and released the EP "Sky Decade" along with the English single "There's No One at All". He continues to be active with new music products in recent years.
What does entering charts and digital platform milestones mean?
International charts and digital platform milestones are a different measure from awards voted by councils. They reflect the actual reach of products beyond the domestic audience, and also show the role of digital distribution and video platforms in bringing Vietnamese music to the region. The Forbes Vietnam 30 Under 30 list of 2018 belongs to this group of recognition, from the angle of career influence rather than a specific work achievement.
Personal life
Sơn Tùng M-TP had a public romantic relationship with singer Thiều Bảo Trâm during the 2013-2021 period. He currently has no publicly confirmed partner with specific birth year information.
Which parts of this profile are solid records, and which are anecdotes?
Milestones such as birth date, hometown, learning to play the organ, the school bands, the contract signing and the founding of the company are facts recorded in biographical sources. Meanwhile, the way he is seen as a phenomenon of young music, or the titles attached to him in the media, are interpretive and change over time, not objective facts. The figures on listens, followers and rankings are data at the time of publication, and may differ depending on source and time of statistics.
