Tran Dinh Long was born on February 22, 1961 in Hai Duong province and studied economics at the National Economics University in Hanoi. In 1992, together with his friend Tran Tuan Duong, he founded Hoa Phat Equipment and Spare Parts Company, a small trading outfit dealing in construction machinery. From there, Hoa Phat gradually branched out into furniture, steel pipes, air conditioners, paint and shipping containers, a diversified structure typical of Vietnamese private businesses in the early reform years.
A pivot to steel
The turning point came when Hoa Phat moved into construction steel, a business that eventually became the group's core, generating most of its revenue and profit. Hoa Phat Group was formally established in 2007 through the merger of its member companies, and its stock, HPG, listed on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange. Long has served as chairman throughout.
The Dung Quat complex and the steel king title
His boldest bet was the Hoa Phat Dung Quat integrated steel complex, which turned the group into Southeast Asia's largest steel producer, with roughly 16 million tonnes of annual capacity, ranking among the world's top 30 steelmakers. That achievement earned him the nickname the steel king of Vietnam in business circles and the press.
Standing among Vietnam's richest
In June 2023, a rally in HPG shares briefly pushed Long past Pham Nhat Vuong to become the wealthiest person on the Vietnamese stock market by directly held shares. In domestic and Forbes billionaire rankings in recent years, he has consistently placed among Vietnam's top two or three richest people, with a fortune fluctuating around 2 to 3 billion dollars. He remains chairman of Hoa Phat Group today, overseeing its steel capacity expansion as well as newer ventures in agriculture, real estate and shipping containers.
