What is Yang Ren?
Yang Ren (陽刃), also known as Yang Ren pattern or Kình Dương, is an important symbolic star in Four Pillars of Destiny (BaZi). The character "yang" indicates strength, while "ren" means blade, implying sharp energy like a sword's edge. In the Four Pillars system, Yang Ren appears when the earthly branch of the day, month, hour, or year pillar is opposite the peak vitality of the Day Master, i.e., the Heavenly Stem of the day pillar.
Origin and Determination
The concept of Yang Ren originates from the theory of Five Elements and Yin-Yang in ancient Eastern philosophy. Accordingly, each Heavenly Stem has a peak position, and the earthly branch opposite that peak is considered Yang Ren. For example, Jia (Yang Wood) peaks at Mao, so Yang Ren of Jia is You. Yi (Yin Wood) peaks at Yin, so Yang Ren of Yi is Shen. Other stems are determined similarly based on relationship tables.
Meaning in BaZi
Yang Ren is often regarded as a symbolic star of fierceness, associated with decisiveness, conflict, and pressure. When Yang Ren appears in the Four Pillars, it can indicate a strong personality, a preference for action, but also a tendency toward disputes, accidents, or gossip. However, if controlled or accompanied by auspicious stars, Yang Ren can transform into extraordinary willpower, leadership ability, and self-protection against danger.
Distinction from Kình Dương
In Zi Wei Dou Shu, Kình Dương is a star in the Six Killing Stars group, element Fire, representing irritability and danger. Although also called kình dương, Yang Ren in BaZi and Kình Dương in Zi Wei are concepts from two different systems. Yang Ren is based on the Stem-Branch relationships of the Four Pillars, while Kình Dương is a fixed star in the Zi Wei chart. Learners need to distinguish clearly to avoid confusion in interpretation.
