An astrological aspect (Vietnamese: khía cạnh chiêm tinh, also called an angular relationship) is the angular distance between two planets or two important points on a chart, such as the Sun and the Moon. When two celestial bodies sit at a certain angle to each other, the interpreter holds that their energies interact in either a harmonious or a tense way. This is one of the core elements of Western astrology, alongside the position of a planet in a sign and in a house.
Origins and how aspects are classified
The Western astrological tradition recognises the major aspects such as the Sextile (around 60 degrees), the Trine (around 120 degrees), the Square (around 90 degrees) and the Opposition (around 180 degrees). There is also the Conjunction (around 0 degrees), meaning two planets lying close together in the same sign. Each aspect is given its own quality: the Sextile and the Trine are usually seen as harmonious, while the Square and the Opposition are usually seen as challenging.
How aspects are used in interpretation
When reading a chart, the interpreter looks at the pairs of planets that form aspects with each other in order to understand how they support or obstruct one another. For example, a Trine between Venus and Jupiter is usually interpreted as a sign of good fortune and of a capacity for enjoyment. A Square between Mars and Saturn usually suggests conflict between the urge to act and limits. How strong the influence is also depends on how exact the angle is (also called the orb), which planets are involved, and which signs they fall in.
Distinguishing it from easily confused terms
An astrological aspect is different from the zodiac signs and the houses in a chart. The zodiac sign indicates a planet's style of expression, the house indicates the area of life the planet affects, while the aspect speaks to the relationship between the planets themselves. It is also worth distinguishing an aspect from an "angle" in the purely geometric sense: in astrology, an angle only carries meaning when tied to symbolic interpretation.

How do different schools understand aspects?
- Traditional Western astrology: Focuses only on the major aspects (Conjunction, Sextile, Square, Trine, Opposition) and uses narrow orbs, emphasising the fixed harmonious or tense quality of each angle.
- Modern psychological astrology: Sees aspects as expressions of inner drives, holds that Squares and Oppositions can be opportunities for growth rather than only obstacles, and adds further minor aspects.
- Vedic astrology (Jyotish): Uses its own system of angular relationships based on signs and planets in the Indian tradition, which does not entirely coincide with the way Western astrology classifies them.
