For many ethnic minorities in Vietnam, especially the Hmong people in the northern highlands, chicken feet divination is not merely a game of chance but an important spiritual ritual tied to agricultural cycles and beliefs. This practice often appears during traditional festivals and Tet, particularly the new rice ceremony.
The Hmong's New Rice Ceremony: The Origin of Chicken Feet Divination
When rice begins to ripen, the Hmong in Bac Yen, Son La, harvest the earliest ripening, fullest grains. These are bundled, dried, and used for the new rice offering. They believe these first grains are the "new rice," and the ceremony is a time to thank ancestors and deities for a good harvest and pray for continued abundance. The ceremony date depends on each family's rice field.
During the ceremony, a feast is prepared. The offering includes a pig's head, a pair of boiled chickens, a tray of new rice, and four cups of wine. The host or a shaman invites ancestors and deities to receive the offerings. After this, a key ritual occurs: the host cuts the feet of the two chickens and gives them to any man and woman present to "examine." This is when chicken feet divination takes place.

According to Pham Thanh Binh, Director of Bac Yen's Cultural Center, chicken feet divination is an ancient custom based on folk experience to judge good or bad omens through the veins, bumps, colors, and shapes of the feet. The reader observes details to predict weather, crops, or fortune.
Notably, this custom carries deep humanistic value. During the new rice ceremony, the reader, regardless of findings, will tell the host the feet indicate good omens and the next harvest will be even more bountiful. Binh explains: "This procedure is psychological. In the new rice celebration, the reader reports the best to create excitement for the people." Thus, it serves to encourage and instill hope in farmers before a new season.
The Custom in the Mekong Delta's Tet
The practice also appears in the Tet culture of southern Vietnam. In "Ăn Tết, chơi Tết miền Tây," author Trần Minh Thương mentions "coi giò gà" (looking at chicken feet) in the Tết nhà ritual.
On the morning of the 3rd day of Tet, families perform Tết nhà to start the new year. They offer a boiled rooster with porridge to deities. The offering includes the chicken, a pair of separated chicken feet tied together, and other items. After the offering, an experienced person reads the chicken feet to predict the family's fortune. The feet are then hung above the kitchen stove to dry and preserve.
Thus, whether in the highlands or the Mekong Delta, the custom is linked to hopes for a lucky new year. The difference lies in context: the Hmong associate it with the new rice ceremony and harvests, while southerners associate it with Tết nhà and yearly fortune.
