Why Cleanse Feng Shui Crystals?
According to many crystal healing traditions, a stone in regular use - especially one worn frequently or exposed to surrounding energy - can gradually become "saturated" or accumulate unwanted energy, reducing its supportive effect over time. Periodic cleansing is seen as a way to "refresh" the stone, releasing old energy so it can continue functioning as it originally did.
Crystals are typically cleansed when newly purchased (before first use), after clear exposure to negative energy (such as following a stressful or conflict-heavy period), or periodically along the monthly lunar cycle.
Common Cleansing Methods
Moonlight
Placing a stone under moonlight, especially on a full moon night, is one of the most popular and safest cleansing methods, suitable for nearly all stone types. Moonlight is believed to carry gentle energy that purifies without harming the stone's structure or color. Simply place the stone where it can receive direct moonlight overnight, such as on a windowsill or outdoors.
Saltwater
Soaking a stone briefly in diluted saltwater or seawater is a traditional cleansing method many trust, since salt is believed to absorb negative energy. However, this method requires particular caution: avoid it with soft, corrosion-prone, or porous stones such as selenite, malachite, turquoise, calcite, or other low-hardness stones, since salt and water can damage their surface or structure. Research a stone's specific properties before applying this method.
Smudging
Using smoke from agarwood incense, dried herbs, or traditional cleansing incense around a stone is common across many cultures. Simply hold the stone in the smoke for a few minutes, visualizing old energy being released as the smoke drifts away. This method is safe for nearly all stones since there's no direct contact with liquid.
Sound
Using sound from a bell, singing bowl, or wind chime to create vibration around a stone is also considered a gentle cleansing method, absolutely safe for every stone type since there's no direct physical impact. Simply place the stone near the sound source and let the vibration pass through it for a few minutes.
Burying in Earth
Some traditions hold that burying a stone in natural soil (a plant pot or garden) overnight or for a few days lets it reabsorb stable, grounding energy from the earth. However, be sure to mark the burial spot clearly to avoid losing the stone, and avoid this method with stones prone to discoloration from prolonged contact with damp soil.
Recharging After Cleansing
After cleansing, many practitioners add a "charging" step by placing the stone under gentle morning sunlight (note that some stones like amethyst and rose quartz can fade if left in strong sun too long), setting it on a clear quartz charging plate, or simply holding the stone while focusing on a positive intention for a few minutes.
A General Note
There's no single "correct" cleansing method - what matters is choosing one suited to each stone's physical properties and one that feels comfortable and meaningful to you. If you're unsure about a particular stone's durability, smudging or sound methods are usually the safest choices since they involve no direct contact with water or strong sunlight.
