TL;DR: Each zodiac sign is commonly associated with certain gemstones carrying symbolic meaning, based on Western astrological tradition blended with gemstone customs from various cultures.
What is the origin of linking stones to zodiac signs?
The tradition of associating gemstones with each zodiac sign or each birth month (birthstone) comes from many ancient cultures (Babylonian, Egyptian, Hebrew) and was gradually systematised over the centuries. Today, the most common lists are usually based on the American gemstone association (birthstones by month) combined with astrological interpretations of the element and ruling planet of each sign.

What approach should one take when choosing feng shui stones?
Lists of stones by zodiac sign have many variations depending on the source (unlike birthstones by calendar month, which have a more official version from the Jewelers of America). Users should treat these as suggestions that are symbolic, aesthetic and rooted in cultural tradition rather than as a fixed scientific rule.
Notes when buying feng shui stones
If you wish to buy feng shui stones or gemstones, you should look into the origin and the reliability of the seller, and distinguish between natural stones, synthetic stones and dyed stones, avoiding purchases made in the expectation of an instant "change of fortune" while neglecting the role of real effort in life.
