What Is Kinh Trập, When Does It Begin, and What Customs Are Associated With It?

TL;DR: Kinh Trập is the third of the 24 solar terms, its Chinese characters meaning insects are awakened, corresponding to a solar longitude of about 345 degrees and usually beginning on March 5 or 6. In the Can Chi calendar it is the term that opens the second lunar month and marks the monthly Can Chi transition. The term's origin is recorded in ancient Chinese seasonal texts such as Nguyệt lệnh and Tuế thời quảng ký, while in Vietnam Kinh Trập is mainly a weather marker of the farming season, not a festival with fixed rituals.

What Is Kinh Trập?

Kinh Trập is the third solar term in the system of 24, coming right after Lập Xuân and Vũ Thủy, and before Xuân Phân. Its Chinese characters are 驚蟄, in which 驚 means to startle or awaken and 蟄 means a hibernating, hidden creature. In the common understanding, this term marks the time when the weather warms, hibernating insects are awakened, and they begin to crawl out of their burrows. The book Tuế thời quảng ký (歲時廣記) by Trần Nguyên Tịnh cites the Tam thống lịch (三統厯): "驚蟄為二月節春分為二月中氣驚蟄者蟄蟲驚而奔出也"[5], meaning Kinh Trập is the term of the second month, Xuân Phân is the trung khí of the second month, and Kinh Trập is when hibernating insects are startled and rush out. An article in Thanh Niên newspaper also explains Kinh Trập as "insects hatching," marking the time when plants sprout and insects multiply[1].

When Does Kinh Trập Begin?

By the modern calculation that takes the spring equinox as the zero point of solar longitude, Kinh Trập corresponds to a solar longitude of about 345 degrees[1]. In 2026, Kinh Trập begins on March 5 and lasts until March 20, when Xuân Phân begins[1].

In Vietnam time, from 1900 to 2100 Kinh Trập usually begins on March 5 or 6; six years from 2076 to 2096 fall on March 4, and 1903 and 1907 fall on March 7. Start times in recent years, Vietnam time:

According to the book Đẩu số tinh thành, each lunar month has two solar terms: the one that comes first is called "Tiết lệnh" or "Tiết," and the one that comes after is called "Trung khí" or "Khí." When calculating the monthly Can Chi, people take the "Tiết" as the transition point. Kinh Trập is the term that marks the transition to the second lunar month, so the moment Kinh Trập arrives is the moment the second month begins and its Can Chi is calculated[2]. This is where many people go wrong: the month boundary in the Can Chi calendar is not the first day of the lunar month but the moment the tiết begins.

The table below compares the position of Kinh Trập within the 24 solar terms:

Why Is Kinh Trập Called That?

The name comes from the scenes of the second month recorded in old books. In its entry for the middle month of spring, Tuế thời quảng ký cites the Nguyệt lệnh: "仲春之月日在奎昬弧中旦建星中律中夾鍾始雨水桃始華倉庚鳴鷹化為鳩𤣥鳥至日夜分雷乃𤼵聲始電蟄蟲咸動啓户始出"[5], describing the second month as the time when rain begins, peach trees begin to bloom, the oriole sings, the hawk turns into the cuckoo, swallows return, day and night are of equal length, thunder begins to sound, lightning begins to flash, and insects all stir, opening their burrows and coming out. In the same entry the book cites the Hiếu kinh vĩ: "雨水後十五日斗甲為驚蟄"[5], meaning that fifteen days after Vũ Thủy, when the handle of the Big Dipper points to the Giáp direction, it is Kinh Trập.

The Chu thư, in the Thời huấn chapter (周書時訓), also records: "驚蟄之日桃始華後五日倉庚鳴後五日鷹化為鳩"[5], meaning on the day of Kinh Trập the peach begins to bloom, five days later the oriole sings, and five days after that the hawk turns into the cuckoo. This is the method of dividing one term into three hou, each five days long, reflecting the biological rhythm of plants and birds. In the Qing dynasty, Hiệp kỷ biện phương thư (volume 12, section Khí hậu) still lists these three hou under Kinh Trập: "驚蟄 桃始華 倉庚鳴 鷹化為鳩"[4].

In its entry for the first month of spring, Tuế thời quảng ký cites the Đại Đới lễ, Hạ tiểu chính chapter (大戴禮夏小正): "正月啓蟄"[5], that is, in the first month insects begin to come out of hibernation. The Hạ tiểu chính places the awakening of insects in the first month, while the Tam thống lịch cited in the same book makes Kinh Trập the term of the second month.

What Customs Are Associated With Kinh Trập?

Tuế thời quảng ký, by Trần Nguyên Tịnh (陳元靚) of the Song dynasty, takes the Nguyệt lệnh, the Hiếu kinh vĩ and the Tam thống lịch as its framework and arranges by month what other books record about the seasonal terms. In the book, Kinh Trập appears only at the head of the entry for the middle month of spring, through the words of the Hiếu kinh vĩ, the Tam thống lịch and the Chu thư Thời huấn; the book records no custom specific to the day of Kinh Trập[5].

In Vietnam, the book Việt Nam phong tục by Phan Kế Bính (1915) records Tet and festival customs but does not mention Kinh Trập. In folk practice, Kinh Trập is known more as a weather marker of the farming season than as a festival with fixed rituals.

In the book Gia lễ giản yếu by Dương Bá Trạc (1932), the author proposes dropping "meaningless" seasonal observances such as Đoan ngũ, Thượng nguyên, Trung nguyên and Trung thu, keeping only Tết Nguyên Đán, Tết Thanh Minh and Tết cơm mới for offerings to the ancestors[3]. Kinh Trập is not on that list.

How Is Kinh Trập Used in Divination and Feng Shui?

In Eastern divination systems, Kinh Trập is not only a weather phenomenon but also a marker for dividing time. The book Thuật số Lạc Thư (Kỳ Môn Độn Giáp nguyên thủy) assigns three terms to the three lines of the Cấn trigram: Lập Xuân unites with the bottom line, Vũ Thủy with the middle line, and Kinh Trập with the top line[6].

The book Trạch vận tân án by Thẩm Trúc Nhưng (translated by Lê Việt Anh) also uses Kinh Trập as a marker in the time periods for calculating vận, for example "27th of the first month to the 27th of the second month, within the Kinh Trập and Xuân Phân terms". This shows that in feng shui, solar terms are units of time for calculating vận khí, not festivals. The book Hiệp kỷ biện phương thư (translated by Vũ Hoàng and Lân Bình) also lists "Directions of the 24 solar terms" as one of the sources for choosing days.

It should be stated clearly: these uses are conventions of each discipline, not astronomical data. The fact that Kinh Trập corresponds to a solar longitude of 345 degrees is data that can be cross-checked with a printed calendar or an independent calculation table. But the fact that Kinh Trập unites with the Cấn trigram or is used to calculate vận is a convention of the book, with reference value within that discipline.

Common Misunderstandings About Kinh Trập

The first misunderstanding is to think that Kinh Trập is a festival with offerings like Tết Nguyên Đán or Tết Trung Thu. In fact, Kinh Trập is a solar term, a period of time rather than a festival day; each solar term lasts 15 or 16 days[1].

The second misunderstanding is to think that Kinh Trập begins exactly on the first day of the second lunar month. It does not. Kinh Trập opens the second month in the solar-term calendar, while the second lunar month begins on the new moon, so the day of Kinh Trập may fall in the first or the second lunar month depending on the year. In 2026, for example, Kinh Trập on March 5 is the 17th day of the first lunar month.

The third misunderstanding is to think that Kinh Trập exists only in China. In fact, the 24 solar terms were introduced into Vietnam long ago and are used in the agricultural calendar. Thanh Niên newspaper reports on Kinh Trập as an event Vietnamese people care about, showing that this term still has a place in modern life[1]. However, its popularity and use in Vietnam may differ from China, depending on region and period.

Nhật Nguyệt's Suggestions

Nhật Nguyệt's suggestion: if you are looking up Kinh Trập to choose a day for a task, remember that it is a solar term, not a specific good or bad day; choosing days by the Can Chi calendar is the job of day-selection tables, and each school has its own conventions. If you garden, this is when insects and weeds start to spring up, so keep an eye on pest control.

Frequently asked questions

When does Kinh Trập begin in 2026?

In 2026, Kinh Trập begins at 20:49 on March 5 (Vietnam time) and lasts until March 20, when Xuân Phân begins at 21:36. That is the moment the Sun reaches a longitude of 345 degrees.

Is Kinh Trập a festival that requires offerings?

No. Kinh Trập is a solar term lasting 15 or 16 days, not a fixed festival day. The book Việt Nam phong tục by Phan Kế Bính records Tet and festival customs but does not mention Kinh Trập. In folk practice, it is mainly a weather marker of the farming season.

In ancient books, does Kinh Trập belong to the first or the second month?

Tuế thời quảng ký cites the Tam thống lịch: "驚蟄為二月節", that is, Kinh Trập is the term that opens the second month. In its entry for the first month, the same book cites the Hạ tiểu chính: "正月啓蟄", meaning that in the first month insects begin to come out of hibernation. The two texts place the awakening of insects in different months.
