Annual Flying Stars for the Đinh Mùi Year 2027: Where Do Ngũ Hoàng, Tam Sát and Thái Tuế Fly To?

TL;DR: According to the annual flying star calculation of the Huyền Không school, in the Đinh Mùi year 2027 the Nine Purple star enters the central palace and Five Yellow flies to the North (the Khảm palace). Tam Sát lies in the three directions Thân, Dậu and Tuất in the West. The Grand Duke sits at the Mùi mountain in the Southwest, and opposite it is the Year Breaker at Sửu, Northeast. The book Trạch vận tân án treats these as directions where breaking ground or major renovation is taboo during the year; this is a convention of the school and has not been verified.

What are the flying stars for Đinh Mùi 2027 and why check each year separately?

Annual flying stars are the method by which a given year's star enters the central palace and then flies through the nine palaces, giving the position of the Nine Stars in the eight directions and the center for that year. Thẩm Trúc Nhưng's book Trạch vận tân án (translated by Lê Việt Anh) sets out how to build the period chart according to the Three Cycles and Nine Periods: take the period number, place it in the central palace and move it forward, and each year has its own annual chart layered over the period chart. According to this book, the same house in period 9 (2024 to 2043) still sees its yearly fortune change because the annual stars shift position.

The Đinh Mùi year 2027 falls in period 9, Lower Cycle. Three layers of stars are commonly mentioned in Huyền Không feng shui: period stars (which change every 20 years), house chart stars (fixed by the sitting and facing directions of the house), and annual stars (which change every year). Trạch vận tân án states clearly that Ngũ Hoàng is divided into Great Period Ngũ Hoàng, House Chart Ngũ Hoàng, Annual Ngũ Hoàng, Monthly Ngũ Hoàng, Daily Ngũ Hoàng and Hourly Ngũ Hoàng[1]. The House Chart Ngũ Hoàng has a strong and lasting effect but shows itself slowly; the Annual Ngũ Hoàng, though weaker, shows its influence more quickly.

Where does Ngũ Hoàng fly to in the Đinh Mùi year 2027?

In the Đinh Mùi year 2027 the star entering the central palace is Cửu Tử, and the annual Ngũ Hoàng flies to the Khảm palace, that is, the North (the three mountains Nhâm, Tý, Quý). The calculation follows Trạch vận tân án: in the Lower Cycle the Giáp Tý year (1984) starts at Thất Xích and each year steps back one number, so 2024 is Tam Bích, 2025 Nhị Hắc, 2026 Nhất Bạch, 2027 Cửu Tử; the direction of the year's Ngũ Hoàng is the palace whose number sums to ten with the star in the centre, 9 pairs with 1, and 1 is Khảm[1]. Flying forward from the centre gives the same result: 9 in the middle, 1 to Càn, 2 to Đoài, 3 to Cấn, 4 to Ly, 5 to Khảm, 6 to Khôn, 7 to Chấn, 8 to Tốn. By the convention of the school the annual chart runs from Lập xuân, that is, from early February 2027. The book calls Ngũ Hoàng the number one killer among the three great afflictions and quotes the "Phi tinh phú": "When Ngũ Hoàng flies to the three forks, only worry about many troubles", then explains that wherever Ngũ Hoàng shines, disturbances such as earthquakes, landslides or collapsing walls easily appear, causing a flourishing house fortune to decline and a good one to turn bad, and people there are greatly affected in health[1].

The book also distinguishes two cases: if the position shone upon by Ngũ Hoàng remains stable with no disturbance, its ferocity is hard to manifest; but once there is disturbance, called "offending Ngũ Hoàng", the destructive force appears at once[1]. This is why the school avoids digging, drilling, cutting or major repairs in the direction Ngũ Hoàng reaches.

One little-known point: according to Trạch vận tân án, although Ngũ Hoàng is inherently an inauspicious deity, when it shines on an âm trạch (grave site) it becomes a blessing deity, a prosperity deity, bringing extremely good things[1]. This is an important exception, showing that one should not mechanically apply one formula to both yang dwellings and yin dwellings.

What does the annual Ngũ Hoàng in each direction predict?

Trạch vận tân án devotes a separate section to judging good and bad fortune when the annual Nine Stars enter the eight directions. For Ngũ Hoàng specifically, the book records: in Khảm it governs serious illness and urinary tract disease, and women should guard against gynecological disease; in Khôn it governs acute illness and blood disease; in Chấn it governs leg pain and misfortune over money; in Tốn it governs skin disease and poisoning; in the Trung cung it governs blood disease and poisoning; in Càn it governs illness of the head, and long journeys are mostly obstructed and the body is much afflicted; in Đoài it governs lawsuits, bad reputation, and easy injury from metal objects; in Cấn it governs intestinal disease and troubled fortune; in Ly it governs eye disease and blood disease[1].

It should be stated clearly that this is the book's method of judgment, not a medical rule. The book also stresses that annual flying stars affect the yearly fortune of the house, and the impact varies by area: the main door affects the fate of everyone in the house, the stove affects health, the bedroom affects personal fortune, the altar affects everyone's fortune, and the desk affects work and study[1].

Where is Tam Sát in the Đinh Mùi year 2027?

Tam Sát in the Đinh Mùi year 2027 lies in the three directions Thân, Dậu and Tuất in the West. The book ranks Tam Sát as the second killer after Ngũ Hoàng, not to be offended; if offended, people suffer fairly serious injury or illness. Trạch vận tân án cites the "Vĩnh Cát thông thư": "Tam Sát is the Sha within the Three Harmony of Thái Tuế, each year occupying the three directions Tuyệt, Thai and Dưỡng. Tuyệt is Kiếp Sát, Thai is Tai Sát, Dưỡng is Tuế Sát"[1].

The book gives the mnemonic for calculating annual Tam Sát as follows: in years of Thân, Tý and Thìn, Tam Sát is in the three directions Tỵ, Ngọ and Mùi in the South; in years of Dần, Ngọ and Tuất, it is in the three directions Hợi, Tý and Sửu in the North; in years of Hợi, Mão and Mùi, it is in the three directions Thân, Dậu and Tuất in the West; in years of Tỵ, Dậu and Sửu, it is in the three directions Dần, Mão and Thìn in the East[1]. The Đinh Mùi year belongs to the Hợi Mão Mùi group, so Tam Sát is in the three directions Thân, Dậu and Tuất in the West. Of the three, Thân is Kiếp Sát, Dậu is Tai Sát and Tuất is Tuế Sát. The Qing date-selection manual Hiệp kỷ biện phương thư (協紀辨方書) records the same positions: in Hợi, Mão and Mùi years Kiếp Sát is at Thân and Tuế Sát at Tuất[3].

The book stresses the rule: "Avoid sitting, not avoid facing; avoid repairs there or ground-breaking"[1]. In feng shui "sitting" is the direction a house or grave backs onto and "facing" is the direction it looks out to: the book avoids sitting in the Tam Sát direction and avoids repairs or ground-breaking there, while facing that direction is not avoided. Monthly, daily and hourly Tam Sát are calculated similarly by month, day and hour.

Where is Thái Tuế in the Đinh Mùi year 2027 and how does it differ from Tam Sát?

Thái Tuế in the Đinh Mùi year sits at the Mùi mountain, within the Khôn palace in the Southwest; the branch that clashes with it is Sửu in the Northeast, called Tuế Phá[3]. As presented in Trạch vận tân án, Thái Tuế is one of the three great afflictions of feng shui, together with Tam Sát and Ngũ Hoàng Chính quan Sát[1]. Compared with Tam Sát and Thái Tuế, the degree of disaster caused by Ngũ Hoàng is ranked by the book as far more severe[1].

The basic difference: Thái Tuế is the star of the year, sitting exactly at the earthly branch of the year (Mùi), carrying the "ruling" nature of that year. Tam Sát is three directions dependent on the Three Harmony of the year, carrying a "sha" nature spreading over three palaces. Ngũ Hoàng is one of the nine stars of the annual chart and flies to one palace each year; only in a year when the number 5 enters the centre does it sit in the central palace. These three stars can coincide in some years, increasing the severity.

The table below summarizes the positions of the three great afflictions in the Đinh Mùi year 2027 according to Trạch vận tân án:

Why distinguish House Chart Ngũ Hoàng from Annual Ngũ Hoàng?

House Chart Ngũ Hoàng is the Ngũ Hoàng star fixed in the house chart, depending on sitting and facing directions and the period. Annual Ngũ Hoàng is the year's Ngũ Hoàng star, changing each year. Trạch vận tân án states clearly: House Chart Ngũ Hoàng has a stronger and longer-lasting effect, but its manifestation is relatively slow, and it takes time before the bad effect is clear; while Annual, Monthly, Daily and Hourly Ngũ Hoàng show their influence more quickly and are very weak[1].

This means: if the house already has House Chart Ngũ Hoàng in the North, and in 2027 Annual Ngũ Hoàng flies to that very direction, the book says the two layers of stars must be read together. But if there is only Annual Ngũ Hoàng alone and that position remains stable with no disturbance, its ferocity is hard to manifest[1]. That is the main point of the section on Ngũ Hoàng in the book.

Does seeing Ngũ Hoàng always mean fear?

Not necessarily. Trạch vận tân án states clearly that if Ngũ Hoàng shines on a yin dwelling it becomes a blessing deity, a prosperity deity, extremely good[1]. For yang dwellings, the degree of influence also depends on the specific position: main door, stove, bedroom, altar and desk each receive different impacts[1]. The book gives an example: when the stove sits in the West and meets the Annual Bát Bạch flying there, the result is abundant wealth but also easy loss[1]. Thus the same star arriving has different effects on each area of the house.

Comparison with other feng shui schools

It should be stated clearly where schools disagree. The method of calculating annual flying stars and Tam Sát presented here follows the Huyền Không school and Trạch vận tân án. Other feng shui schools such as Bát Trạch, Loan đầu and Dương trạch tam yếu have their own frames of reference and do not necessarily use the same star table. The book Nhập môn loan đầu: tầm long điểm huyệt also notes: "Using directions to judge good and bad fortune belongs to the category of lý khí; different schools lead to different methods"[2]. For the same direction, the Phi tinh Sơn bàn school holds that when a prosperous star flies there, high mountains are favorable, and when a declining or dead star flies there, mountain peaks should generally not appear[2]. This is a different way of reasoning from simply checking the annual table.

On Tam Sát and Thái Tuế the old date-selection books and the Huyền Không book agree. Hiệp kỷ biện phương thư cites a theory explaining the rule "good to face, not good to sit": Tam Sát is the direction that clashes with the strong direction of the three-harmony frame, as in Thân, Tý and Thìn years, which form the water frame; water is strong in the North, so Tam Sát is in the South[3]. By the same rule, Hợi, Mão and Mùi years form the wood frame, wood is strong in the East, so Tam Sát is in the West.

Applied to the Đinh Mùi year 2027, what do the two books say?

What follows only arranges what the two books say for the year 2027. These are conventions of the Huyền Không school and of date selection, unverified, and not instructions for altering a house.

  • North (Nhâm, Tý, Quý): the annual Ngũ Hoàng arrives. According to Trạch vận tân án, while this direction stays quiet its harm hardly shows, and only a disturbance counts as offending it; the book lists the main door, room doors, the bed, the stove and machines placed in the Ngũ Hoàng direction as the things this school is wary of[1].
  • The three directions Thân, Dậu and Tuất in the West: Tam Sát. The book avoids a house or grave sitting there and avoids repairs or ground-breaking there; facing that way is not avoided[1].
  • The Mùi mountain in the Southwest is Thái Tuế and the Sửu mountain in the Northeast is Tuế Phá. Hiệp kỷ biện phương thư records that building and moving avoid these two directions[3].
  • To read a particular house, the school requires a house chart drawn from its sitting and facing, with the annual chart laid over it. A house that already has House Chart Ngũ Hoàng in the North is treated by the book as the heavier case; with the annual Ngũ Hoàng alone, the book says the effect is quick but very weak[1].
  • The statements about illness in the book are feng shui notions, not medical diagnoses. For a health problem, see a doctor.

What to keep in mind when checking flying stars for the Đinh Mùi year 2027

First, the result depends on the school and the book. This article follows Trạch vận tân án. Other schools may give different results.

Second, annual flying stars are only one layer among many layers of stars. One should not judge a house's fortune based on only one annual table.

Third, predictions such as "urinary tract disease", "lawsuits" or "leg pain" in the book are traditional feng shui judgments, not medical or legal conclusions. Readers should treat them as cultural reference, not certain forecasts.

Fourth, for accurate checking of a specific house, one needs to know its sitting and facing directions, year of construction or year of moving in to build the house chart, and then layer the annual chart on top. Checking only the annual table without a house chart gives only half the picture.
