Couple Age Matching: Can Chi, Nạp Âm or Cung Phi?

TL;DR: Couple age matching is a folk belief with three main methods: comparing earthly branches (Three Harmony, Four Clash, Six Harm), comparing nạp âm through the generating and overcoming cycles, and comparing cung phi by the Bát Trạch school; the three often disagree for the same couple. Vạn sự bất cầu nhân divides nạp âm relations into sinh nhập, sinh xuất, khắc xuất and khắc nhập, while the Qing court's Hiệp kỷ biện phương thư calls marriage matching a fabrication of practitioners.

What is couple age matching, and why are there several methods?

Couple age matching (xem tuổi vợ chồng) means comparing the lunar birth years of two people to say whether they "match". It is a folk belief, not a scientific conclusion, and there is no single method: each one uses a different layer of the same birth year, namely the earthly branch (zodiac animal), the heavenly stem, the nạp âm element, or the cung phi (Kua) of the Bát Trạch (Eight Mansions) school.

In Vietnam, age matching is one step of a marriage. Phan Kế Bính records in Việt Nam phong tục that before the first marriage visit, people chose a family of matching standing and checked that the two ages did not clash before engaging a go-between, and that a husband and wife a year or two apart in age were considered a good pair[3].

How do the methods differ?

By earthly branch. The simplest method compares only the zodiac animals of the two years. The four Three Harmony groups (Thân Tý Thìn, Tỵ Dậu Sửu, Dần Ngọ Tuất, Hợi Mão Mùi) count as a match; the three Four Clash groups (Dần Thân Tỵ Hợi, Tý Ngọ Mão Dậu, Thìn Tuất Sửu Mùi) and the six Six Harm pairs (Tý Mùi, Sửu Ngọ, Dần Tỵ, Mão Thìn, Thân Hợi, Dậu Tuất) count as clashes. With only 12 animals, everyone born 12 years apart falls into the same box.

By nạp âm. Each can chi pair of the 60-year cycle carries a nạp âm name belonging to one of the five elements; Giáp Tý and Ất Sửu, for example, are Hải Trung Kim. The two nạp âm destinies are compared through the generating and overcoming cycles of the five elements.

By cung phi. The Bát Trạch school turns the birth year and sex into one of eight trigrams, split into the East group and the West group. The method was made for choosing a house's facing; carried over to marriage, it compares the trigrams of husband and wife. For the same birth year, a man and a woman can get different trigrams.

The methods can give different answers for the same couple. Take a husband born in 1990 (Canh Ngọ) and a wife born in 1992 (Nhâm Thân):

How does Vạn sự bất cầu nhân match ages by nạp âm?

Vạn sự bất cầu nhân has a section on matching a couple's ages that rests on the five elements: generation is a match, overcoming is not, and the direction of the relation is then broken down[2]:

CaseMeaningThe book's verdict
Sinh nhậpThe wife's element generates the husband'sVery good
Sinh xuấtThe husband's element generates the wife'sSomewhat weaker
Khắc xuấtThe husband overcomes the wifeBad but still passable
Khắc nhậpThe wife overcomes the husbandVery bad
Tỵ hòaHusband and wife share one elementAlso usable

By this book, the example couple above is sinh xuất, "somewhat weaker", even though many sources simply say "Thổ generates Kim, so it is a match". The book itself carries two opposite sayings about a shared element: one says two Wood break, two Metal chip, and so on, the other that two Fire make a blaze, two Wood make a forest; the book explains that it depends on the kind of element, so Tích Lịch Hỏa and Thiên Thượng Hỏa cannot go together, while Phú Đăng Hỏa and Sơn Hạ Hỏa light each other[2].

Why does the Hiệp kỷ biện phương thư reject marriage matching?

The Hiệp kỷ biện phương thư (協紀辨方書), the almanac compiled by Yunlu (Doãn Lộc) and other officials on the order of the Qianlong court of the Qing, has a 36th volume titled "Correcting errors" (Biện ngoa). Its entry on "marriage matching and the month of great benefit" opens by saying that among the claims of the yin-yang schools, the fabrications of practitioners that are absurd and mislead the world are "none worse than marriage matching and the month of great benefit" (未有如合婚大利月之尤甚者)[1].

The book gives several arguments[1]:

  • The Book of Documents, the Book of Songs and the Book of Rites speak of marriage but never of marriage matching or a month of great benefit; the method of fate reckoning by birth date, used to judge a long or short life and success or hardship, never used a man's and a woman's birth years and months to decide that one harms the other.
  • The theory is attributed to Lü Cai (Lã Tài) of the Tang, but his biography in the Book of Tang shows he refuted such arts in detail, so the attribution is a practitioners' forgery.
  • On comparing palaces: the Three Eras and Nine Palaces refer to the star that enters the centre palace in a given year, not to the destiny of people born that year; pairing two palaces by the geomancers' method of wandering years to decide good and bad is even more wrong, since geomancy seeks pure yin or pure yang while marriage pairs yin with yang.
  • On the taboos of the "lonely star" and "widow star" (a boy born in the first month of a Hợi, Tý or Sửu year said to harm his wife, a girl born in the ninth month said to harm her husband), the book notes that over those three years, a single month combined with days and hours already gives thousands of charts, and to claim they all harm a spouse is something "even a child of three feet would not believe" (雖三尺童子亦不信也).

These are the words of an 18th-century court text, written from inside the calendar tradition itself, not the criticism of a modern writer.

Do other systems also read marriage?

Yes. Tử Vi reads the Spouse palace of a chart, and Lục Nhâm and Kỳ Môn have their own methods for questions about marriage. These rest on the chart or the reading cast at a given moment, not just the birth year, so they do not give the same results as the methods above. All of them are conventions of each system, not calendar facts.

How should the result of couple age matching be understood?

In daily life many people mix the methods: a clash of animals means a clash, an overcoming of nạp âm means a clash, two different groups means no match. When the methods disagree, people often do not know which to follow, and that is where needless worry starts.

A suggestion from Nhật Nguyệt: when matching ages, know which method is being used and do not add the methods' scores together, since they are not on the same scale. The result is a cultural way of understanding marriage, not a verdict on two people's future; an imperial almanac of the past already called marriage matching absurd.

Frequently asked questions

Should couple age matching use can chi, nạp âm or cung phi?

No method is a common standard. Earthly branches have only 12 values, nạp âm follows the 60-year cycle and cung phi also depends on sex, so the same couple can match by one method and not by another. What matters is knowing which method is used and not adding their scores together.

Why does the Hiệp kỷ biện phương thư reject marriage matching?

The book argues that the classics speak of marriage but never of marriage matching, that attributing the theory to Lü Cai of the Tang is a forgery since Lü Cai himself refuted such arts, and that pairing two palaces by the geomancers' wandering-year method is wrong, since geomancy seeks pure yin or pure yang while marriage pairs yin with yang.

How do nạp âm and cung phi differ?

Nạp âm assigns an element name to each can chi pair in the 60-year cycle, so two people born in the same year always share it. Cung phi depends on birth year and sex, so the same birth year can give two different trigrams for a man and a woman. For 1990, for example, a man is Khảm and a woman is Cấn.
