Ngô Quyền
Ngô Quyền was born in 897 in Đường Lâm village (now in Ba Vì district, Hà Tây). He was the son of Ngô Mân, a local governor. Historical records describe him as a man of imposing appearance, with bright eyes and a tiger-like stride, known for his bravery and strength.
Career
In 920, Ngô Quyền joined Dương Đình Nghệ, a general under the Khúc family, in Ái Châu (Thanh Hóa). After Dương Đình Nghệ captured Đại La in 931 and declared himself Tiết độ sứ, he appointed Ngô Quyền to govern Ái Châu. For seven years (931-938), Ngô Quyền administered the region, bringing peace and prosperity to the people.
In 937, Dương Đình Nghệ was assassinated by Kiều Công Tiễn, a subordinate, who seized power. Ngô Quyền rallied forces, marched north, and eliminated Kiều Công Tiễn at Đại La.
The Battle of Bạch Đằng (938)
In 938, the Southern Han army led by Lưu Hoằng Tháo invaded. Ngô Quyền devised a plan to place sharpened iron-tipped stakes in the Bạch Đằng riverbed. The stakes were hidden underwater at high tide and emerged at low tide, obstructing enemy ships. His forces, hidden in ambush, coordinated attacks from both land and water. The battle resulted in the near-total destruction of the enemy fleet, and Lưu Hoằng Tháo was killed. The victory at Bạch Đằng in 938 ended centuries of Chinese domination and marked a new era of independence for the Vietnamese people.
