Starting a instant noodle workshop in Russia
Nguyễn Đăng Quang was born on 23/8/1963 in Quảng Trị. He belongs to the generation of Vietnamese who went to Eastern Europe to study from the 1980s, a period when many students were sent for training in socialist countries, and who stayed to do business when that system collapsed. He earned a Master of Business Administration at Plekhanov University of Economics (Russia) and a Doctorate in Physics at the Academy of Sciences of Belarus. These two foundations, one being management knowledge and the other research thinking, both appear throughout most of his subsequent career journey.
Why is a small instant noodle workshop in Russia noteworthy?
Because it was born right when the post-Soviet Russian market fell into a state of scarcity of consumer goods, when the old distribution apparatus collapsed while the new system had not yet formed. He and some friends opened a small instant noodle production workshop to sell to the Vietnamese community there, that is, starting from a narrow and familiar customer group. This facility gradually grew into Masan Rus Trading, at one point producing tens of millions of noodle packets each month, then expanding into chili sauce, soy sauce and other seasonings.
Building Masan in Vietnam
In the early 2000s, Mr. Quang brought the capital and experience accumulated in Russia back home, founding Masan Group Corporation. This was the time when Vietnam's economy opened up more strongly, the urban consumer class began to grow and the packaged goods market still had many gaps. Masan Consumer quickly became one of the largest consumer goods enterprises in Vietnam with familiar brands such as Chin-su soy sauce and fish sauce, Nam Ngư, Omachi noodles, Kokomi, Wake-up coffee.
What do the listing and the acquisition of Vinacafé say?
These two things show that Masan shifted from a purely manufacturing enterprise to a group with a broader financial structure and brand portfolio. Masan Group listed on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange in 2009, bringing the company into the public capital market and creating a channel for mobilizing funds for later expansion steps. In 2011, Masan Consumer acquired the controlling stake in Vinacafé Biên Hòa, bringing this long-standing instant coffee brand into the group ecosystem.
What is noteworthy about the role at Techcombank?
Mr. Quang holding the role of First Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Techcombank Bank from 2016 shows the connection between Masan and the finance and banking sector, which is the backing for large-scale expansion plans. This is a governance role parallel to the role of running the consumer group, not a separate activity.
Retail expansion and billionaire status
In 2019, Masan received the transfer of the VinCommerce retail system (VinMart, VinMart+) from Vingroup, later renamed WinCommerce with the WinMart brand, making Masan one of the largest modern retailers in Vietnam, alongside the consumer goods, animal feed and mining segments. This deal is noteworthy because it brought an enterprise that was strong in production and branding directly down to the retail stage, where it comes into direct contact with consumers. Thanks to assets tied to shares in Masan and Techcombank, he has for many consecutive years been named in the list of Vietnamese USD billionaires according to Forbes and Bloomberg. He is currently Chairman of the Board of Directors of Masan Group.
What is certain record and what is the less certain part?
The certain part includes milestones that can be cross-checked through corporate records and economic press: date of birth, degrees, the founding of Masan, the Vinacafé deal, the listing and the VinCommerce deal. The less certain part is the details about the early period in Russia, where the startup story is often retold in anecdotal form and not every figure has an independent verifiable source. The safe way to read it is to view the first part as context and motivation, and the latter part as facts.
