Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao was born on June 7, 1970. At 17 she left for the former Soviet Union to study, majoring in finance and credit at the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics in Moscow, and later earned a doctorate in economic cybernetics in Russia. As early as her second year of university she started trading goods between Asia and Eastern Europe, taking advantage of the consumer-goods shortages of the late Soviet period to deal in electronics, fax machines and agricultural products. After three years of accumulating capital, she made her first million dollars at age 21.
Building Sovico and HDBank
Returning to Vietnam in the mid-1990s, she helped found and run two of the country's early private banks, VIB and Techcombank. In 2008 she invested in HDBank and became its standing deputy chairwoman, steering its merger with DaiABank and its acquisition of Societe Generale's Vietnam consumer-finance arm (SGVF), later renamed HD Saison through a partnership with Japan's Credit Saison. Alongside banking, she grew Sovico Group into a multi-sector conglomerate worth several billion dollars, spanning finance, aviation, real estate and energy.
Founding Vietjet Air
After roughly a decade studying low-cost carrier models such as Southwest, Ryanair and AirAsia, she obtained a license and established Vietjet Aviation Joint Stock Company in 2007. The airline's first commercial flight took off in late 2011, on the Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi route. From about 8 percent of the domestic market in 2012, Vietjet grew to roughly 41 percent by 2016, rivaling state-owned Vietnam Airlines, and listed on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange in 2017.
A self-made billionaire
In 2017, Forbes recognized her as the first self-made female USD billionaire in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. In 2018 she was named to Forbes' list of the world's 100 most powerful women. She currently serves as Chairwoman of Vietjet Air, standing deputy chairwoman of HDBank, and Chairwoman of Sovico Group.
