In the Bát Tự (BaZi) system, also called Tứ Trụ (Four Pillars), each person's birth is organized into four pillars: the Year Pillar, the Month Pillar, the Day Pillar and the Hour Pillar. Each pillar consists of a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. The Day Pillar is the third pillar, determined from the birth date according to the Can Chi (Stem-Branch) calendar, not the regular solar or lunar calendar. Within it, the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar is called the Nhật Nguyên (also Nhật Can, Nhật Chủ, the Day Master), and the Earthly Branch of the Day Pillar is called the Nhật Chi.

One point needs to be stated right at the start: the Day Pillar is not an isolated character to look up for meaning, it is the root from which the entire chain of reasoning in the Tử Bình school is built. This article follows exactly that chain: determine the Day Pillar, measure strength or weakness, define the structure, and only then choose the useful god. Skip one step and the following steps lose their foundation. And at each step, the basis for that step needs to be pointed out, not just the result.

How Is the Day Pillar Determined?

Unlike the Year Pillar and Month Pillar, which can be derived from arithmetic formulas, the Day Pillar requires looking up the Can Chi calendar or using specialized software. The reason is that the 60-day cycle (lục thập hoa giáp, the sixty-term cycle) does not align evenly with solar months or years, so there is no simple division to calculate it directly. For example, January 1, 2024 in the Can Chi calendar is the day Giáp Tý, but January 2, 2024 is already Ất Sửu. A single day's difference means the Day Pillar is completely different, dragging the entire chart into change. Precisely for this reason, accurately determining the Day Pillar is the foundational and most important step when constructing a Bát Tự chart.

To understand more clearly how Can Chi is calculated, one can refer to the general rule: the Stem of a year is determined by the remainder when that year is divided by 10, the Branch is the remainder when divided by 12. However, this rule only holds for the Year Pillar, it does not apply to the Day Pillar because days do not follow a cycle of 10 or 12, they follow a continuous 60-day cycle.

In Bát Tự, the Nhật Nguyên (the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar) is regarded as representing the person themselves. All other elements in the chart, including the seven remaining Can Chi characters of the Year, Month and Hour Pillars and the various stars and luck cycles, are read in relation to the Nhật Nguyên. Specifically:

• Determining whether the self is strong or weak: Based on the generating and controlling relationships between the Nhật Nguyên and the other Can Chi, especially the element of the birth month (nguyệt lệnh, the month command). For example, a person whose Nhật Nguyên is Giáp Mộc born in the month of Dần (where Wood is strong) usually has a strong self; if born in the month of Thân (where Metal controls Wood), the self tends to be weak.
• Determining the useful god: From the strong or weak state of the Nhật Nguyên, one works out the "useful god", the element that needs to be added or restrained to balance the destiny. This is one of the most decisive factors in judging the fortune and misfortune of an entire life.
• Judging wealth, authority, resource, output: Taking the Nhật Nguyên as the root, one defines the Ten Gods, ten "gods" representing relationships and events. For example, the element the Nhật Nguyên generates is called Thực Thần (children, wealth through talent), the element that controls the Nhật Nguyên is called Quan Sát (career, pressure, authority), the element the Nhật Nguyên controls is called Chính Tài/Thiên Tài (money, spouse). The entire Ten Gods system is built on the foundation of the Nhật Nguyên.

What Does the Nhật Chi Mean?

If the Nhật Nguyên is "me", then the Nhật Chi (the Earthly Branch of the Day Pillar) is usually used to discuss the spouse palace, the partner, the marriage relationship, and also the deep inner part that the person rarely reveals. Specifically:

• Judging spouse: The Nhật Chi is the seat of the wife (for men) or husband (for women). The element and Can Chi in the Nhật Chi, especially the hidden stems (the Stems concealed inside the Earthly Branch), will reveal the personality, appearance and compatibility with the partner. For example, a Nhật Chi of Tý (Water element) often suggests a clever, flexible partner who is somewhat hard to pin down.
• Judging inner life: The Nhật Chi is also seen as one's own "seat", reflecting the thoughts and feelings inside that the person rarely shares. If the Nhật Chi is clashed or destroyed by other pillars, the person tends to have inner conflicts, or marriage meets with obstacles.
• Combining with the Ten Gods: The hidden stems in the Nhật Chi, mapped against the Nhật Nguyên, become a specific Ten God. For example, if the Nhật Nguyên is Giáp Mộc and the Nhật Chi is Thìn (Thìn contains the hidden stems Mậu Thổ, Ất Mộc, Quý Thủy), Mậu Thổ is the Thiên Tài of Giáp Mộc, so this person tends to value money, or the spouse has good economic ability.

Is the Day Pillar favorable or unfavorable when the self is strong or weak?

The Day Pillar consists of the Day Stem and the Day Branch, and is where the Day Master resides. When measuring strength or weakness, the Day Branch is an important axis of rootedness, but it cannot replace the month order. If the self is strong, the Day Pillar is usually a place where surplus energy is released, so when the Day Stem is exposed it can become favorable when it drains or controls, and unfavorable when it continues to generate and support. If the self is weak, the Day Pillar is the last support, so when the Day Stem is exposed it is usually favorable when it receives generation and support, and unfavorable when it is overcome or drained. The Day Pillar becomes the useful god only when its element directly resolves the structure, such as through support and restraint, mediation, seasonal adjustment, disease and remedy, or when the chart has already entered a following structure and the element that follows is located right at the Day Pillar. How Is the Useful God Chosen? Four Paths and Where They Disagree

There are four commonly used ways of choosing the useful god. They are not mutually exclusive, but they do not always give the same answer.

Support and restraint is the most widely used way. The principle: a weak self is supported (generated, reinforced for the Nhật Nguyên), a strong self is restrained (controlled, drained, weakened for the Nhật Nguyên). This way stands directly on the strength and weakness result from the previous step, so it is the "default" way in most charts.

Mediation is used when two elements are in evenly matched conflict, with neither winning. Then an intermediate element is taken as a bridge to dissolve the confrontation. For example, if Metal and Wood are fighting to a draw, Water can stand between them because Metal generates Water and Water generates Wood, turning clash into a generating cycle.

Climate adjustment is used according to season, not according to force. Being born in winter when it is too cold calls for Fire, being born in summer when it is too hot calls for Water. This way is especially needed when the chart's nguyệt lệnh falls into extreme cold or extreme heat, because then climate becomes a bigger issue than relative force.

Disease and remedy seeks out the worst flaw in the chart, called the "disease", then takes the element that treats exactly that spot, called the "remedy". This way does not look first at whether the self is strong or weak, but at the most painful point of the structure.

These four ways cannot be ranked for every chart, and the Tử Bình schools do not agree on the order of priority. Some schools place support and restraint first and treat climate adjustment as supplementary. Some place climate adjustment first, arguing that climate is a condition for survival and cannot be ignored whether the self is strong or weak. Some follow disease and remedy as the root principle and treat the other three as special cases. For a specific chart, the four ways can produce four different useful gods, and the interpreter is forced to choose one. This is a real disagreement within the discipline, not a misunderstanding that can be cleared up by reading one more article.

The takeaway is not "which way is correct", but this: when reading an interpreted chart, one should ask the interpreter which way they used to choose the useful god. With the same chart, changing the way of choosing the useful god changes the entire conclusion about fortune and misfortune.

Illustrative Example

Suppose a person is born on August 15, 1990 (solar calendar). Looking up the Can Chi calendar, we know this person's Day Pillar is Canh Thân. Thus:

• The Nhật Nguyên is Canh Kim, representing the self. Canh Kim is yang Metal, symbolizing metal, blades, with a resolute, decisive character.
• The Nhật Chi is Thân, Metal element, belonging to Yang. Thân contains the hidden stems Canh Kim, Nhâm Thủy, Mậu Thổ. Looking at the Ten Gods: Canh Kim is the parallel companion (friends, siblings), Nhâm Thủy is Thực Thần (children, talent), Mậu Thổ is Thiên Ấn (learning, benefactors). This shows the person has supportive friends, is intelligent and creative, and benefits from education and elders.
• Because the Nhật Chi is Thân (the same element as the Nhật Nguyên), this person tends to be independent, self-reliant, rarely leaning on others, and in marriage may meet a partner with a strong personality, relatively equal to themselves.

Going one step further along the chain: to know whether this Canh Kim is strong or weak, one must see which Branch the chart's nguyệt lệnh falls into. If the nguyệt lệnh is Thân or Dậu, Canh Kim attains the command, the self leans strong. If the nguyệt lệnh is Tỵ, Ngọ or Mùi, the self leans weak. Only with that result can the structure be discussed, and only then can the useful god be chosen. This example stops at the Day Pillar so there is not enough data to conclude, and that is exactly the point to see: a Day Pillar read on its own cannot interpret anything, it only opens the chain.

How Does the Day Pillar Relate to the Other Pillars?

The Day Pillar does not stand alone but always interacts with the Year Pillar, Month Pillar and Hour Pillar. This interaction shows through:

• Clash, Combination, Punishment, Harm, Destruction among the Earthly Branches: For example, if the Nhật Chi is clashed by the Earthly Branch of the Hour Pillar (called "Nhật Chi clashed at the Hour Pillar"), it can indicate that marriage or late-life career meets many upheavals.
• Stem combination, Stem clash: The Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar (the Nhật Nguyên) can combine or clash with the Stems of the Month Pillar and Hour Pillar. For example, a Nhật Nguyên of Giáp combines with Kỷ (the Stem of the Month Pillar), forming "Giáp Kỷ combining and transforming into Earth", which can change the meaning of the whole chart.

These interactions do not replace the measurement of strength and weakness, they run in parallel and can skew the result. A Nhật Chi that is strongly clashed can lose most of its ability to support the Nhật Nguyên, making the chart weaker than a pure count suggests. This is why the measurement of strength and weakness must be done after the entire Can Chi board has been drawn, not on each pillar separately. And because interactions can change the measurement result, they can be the factor that pushes a chart from "ordinarily weak" into the zone where the interpreter must consider the following structure.

However, it must be emphasized that Bát Tự is only a reference tool, it does not absolutely determine a life, each person still has the right to decide for themselves and to change their destiny through their own effort.
