The Parent Spirit in Liu Yao (Six Lines): The Element That Generates the Palace, Parents, Documents, Property, and the Enemy of the Descendant

Hào Phụ Mẫu trong Lục Hào: hành sinh cung quẻ, cha mẹ, giấy tờ, nhà cửa và kỵ thần của Tử Tôn
TL;DR: The Parent Spirit (Hào Phụ Mẫu) is the line whose element generates the element of the palace the hexagram belongs to. It represents parents, elders, and everything that shelters us: house, vehicle, clothing, documents, contracts, and news. It is the useful spirit for questions about parents, study, qualifications, property, and contracts, but it is also the enemy of the Descendant because Parent controls Descendant. Reading it correctly requires the full context of generation and control in the whole hexagram, not just one line.

What Is the Parent Spirit and Why Does It Stand for Both Parents and Documents?

The Parent Spirit is the line whose element generates the element of the palace. For example, a hexagram in the Metal palace has its Parent Spirit in Earth, because Earth generates Metal. A hexagram in the Wood palace has its Parent Spirit in Water, because Water generates Wood. This is the rule for identifying the Parent Spirit in Liu Yao, and it is also why it is called the line that generates the palace.

In the six relatives system, each line is assigned one of five roles: Parent, Sibling, Descendant, Wealth, and Officer. The book Zeng Shan Bu Shi by Master Ye He states clearly: to judge fortune, first see who the querent is and what the matter is, then determine which line serves as the useful spirit. Because the Parent Spirit generates the palace, its root meaning is parents, elders, and those who give life and raise us. From that root meaning, the ancients extended it to everything that shelters and nurtures: house, vehicle, clothing, documents, certificates, contracts, letters, and news.

The Liu Ren text, volume 1, introductory section, also defines the Parent Spirit as parents and elders, and as livelihood and means of living. It records: if the Parent Spirit is strong and meets auspicious deities, parents are well and livelihood prospers; if it is weak or dead and meets inauspicious deities, parents are unwell and livelihood declines. This definition shows that the Parent Spirit is not only blood relation but also the material foundation of life.

When Is the Parent Spirit Taken as the Useful Spirit?

The useful spirit is the line representing the matter asked about. When the question concerns parents, teachers, elders, or things in the sheltering group such as house, vehicle, clothing, documents, certificates, contracts, and news, the Parent Spirit is taken as the useful spirit.

According to Zeng Shan Bu Shi, when seeking office or fame, if the Officer line holds the Self line or is supported by the day and month, or if a moving line is Officer and generates or combines with the Self line, success is easy. But if the Descendant holds the Self line or moves in the hexagram, success in exams or promotion is difficult. This shows that Parent and Officer generate each other, while Descendant controls Officer, so when asking about career, a moving Descendant is usually avoided.

It is necessary to distinguish the Parent Spirit from the Self line and the second line when reading a house. Materially, the house consists of walls, roof, and protection, which is the Parent Spirit's domain; the owner corresponds to the Self line, and the main living space, the "household," corresponds to the second line. This distinction matters because it determines the reading. For example, when the Self line is static and the Parent moves, the house is being repaired but the owner does not want change; if the second line clashes with the Self line, internal family conflict is likely.

Table of the Eight Palaces: Palace Element, Parent Element, and the Branches Carrying That Element

Below is a table matching the eight palaces with the element of the Parent Spirit in each palace, along with the earthly branches carrying that element. The table follows the rule that the Parent Spirit carries the element that generates the palace element.

PalacePalace ElementParent ElementBranches Carrying the Parent Element

KanWaterMetalShen, You
GenEarthFireSi, Wu

This table helps quickly find what element the Parent Spirit of a hexagram in any palace carries, and from there determine its generating and controlling relations with the other lines.

How Is the Parent Spirit Holding the Self Line Read?

According to a traditional verse on reading hexagrams, when the Parent Spirit holds the Self line, it signifies toil and hardship for the querent. The verse also says: seeking a child or a wife is very difficult; if the Officer line moves and the Wealth line is still, then seeking fame or office succeeds; if the Wealth line moves, pursuing profit brings no trouble.

The verse adds: when the Parent holds the Self line, Siblings are harmonious, children are distant, and illness is frequent; seeking office succeeds, but the Descendant is disorderly and must be kept at a distance. This reflects the logic of the six relatives: Parent generates Sibling, so Sibling benefits; Parent controls Descendant, so children are harmed or distant.

However, these are old verses, general in nature, and may not hold in every case. In a specific reading, one must also examine the day and month, moving lines, transformed lines, and all generating, controlling, clashing, and combining relations.

Parent Moving and Parent Moving to Control the Descendant

When the Parent Spirit moves, its influence spreads through the whole hexagram. If the Parent moves to generate the Self line, it indicates help, protection, good news, and favorable documents. If the Parent moves to control the Descendant, matters concerning children, health, joy, and entertainment may meet obstacles.

The Tuyen Tap Bai Viet Kinh Dich Chon Loc number 16 recounts a case: a pregnant woman asked Master Shao for a hexagram and cast Kun changing to Gou, with the Parent Spirit Si fire holding the Self line, further supported by both the month and day, making it extremely strong. Because the Parent moves to control the Descendant, this sign controls the Descendant very heavily. The judgment was that she was not pregnant, and even if she were, it would be hard to keep. The basis is that the Parent is the controller of the Descendant, and once the Parent is both strong and moving, the Descendant, even if present, can hardly avoid harm.

However, schools differ on the severity of Parent moving to control Descendant. Some hold that a moving Parent alone is enough to judge the Descendant as controlled, with no further examination. Others hold that one must see whether the Descendant is generated and supported, whether it advances, or whether it meets a clash to open, before deciding the degree of harm. This difference stems from views on the role of moving and transformed lines in the hexagram.

How Are Parent Strong, Weak, and Moving Transformations Read?

When the Parent is strong, meaning it is supported by the month and day or generated by moving lines, parents are well, the house is solid, documents are favorable, and news is good. If the Parent is weak, meaning it is broken by the month, in the void, or controlled by other lines, parents have troubles, the house is damaged, documents are obstructed, and news is unclear.

When the Parent moves and transforms into an Advancing spirit, meaning it becomes a line of the same element in a higher position, matters concerning the Parent tend to progress and grow stronger. When the Parent moves and transforms into a Retreating spirit, matters tend to decline. When the Parent moves and transforms into Void, matters may fall into emptiness, waiting, and cannot be resolved immediately. When the Parent moves and transforms into Officer, there may be news from authorities, administrative documents, or parents facing matters of power or law.

The Tuyen Tap Bai Viet Kinh Dich Chon Loc number 12 states: a moving line that does not transform into void is not considered truly void, and a line transforming into an Advancing spirit, even if broken by the month, is not truly broken. For fortune, these two can be set aside because the dominant trend is advancement, which is good. The useful point is that the "void" information helps greatly in determining timing: when the Descendant line is filled, meaning it leaves the void and is no longer broken by the month, that is when a child comes.

The Parent Spirit as the Enemy of the Descendant

In the six relatives system, Parent controls Descendant. This means when Parent is the useful spirit, Descendant is the foe spirit, the factor controlling the useful spirit. Conversely, when Descendant is the useful spirit, Parent is the enemy spirit, the factor harming the useful spirit.

The Tuyen Tap Bai Viet Kinh Dich Chon Loc number 1 gives a situation: if the Parent is taken as the useful spirit, representing what protects us such as house and clothing, then the role of origin spirit belongs to Officer, because Officer generates Parent; the role of draining spirit belongs to Sibling, because Parent generates Sibling; the role of foe spirit belongs to Descendant, because Parent controls Descendant; and the role of enemy spirit belongs to Wealth, because Wealth controls Parent. This analysis allows viewing a problem from many angles, fully assessing the factors at play, and thus making wiser decisions.

Volume 1 of Liu Ren also points out: when the main matter line appears among the six positions, and there is a controlling spirit, it is a bad hexagram; if a foe spirit is added, it is worse, because the foe spirit always generates the controlling spirit to increase its power to control the main matter line. For example, when asking about money, the main matter line is Wealth, so the controlling spirit is Sibling and the foe spirit is Parent; this is because Wealth controls Parent, making Parent resentful, and when meeting Sibling it incites Sibling to control Wealth.

Where Schools Disagree on the Parent Spirit

Zeng Shan Bu Shi by Master Ye He and Zeng Bu Bu Shi Zheng Zong by Wang Wei De list matters belonging to the Parent differently. Zeng Shan Bu Shi emphasizes Parent as parents, elders, and livelihood, the means of living. Zeng Bu Bu Shi Zheng Zong extends Parent to documents, certificates, contracts, lawsuits, and sheltering things such as house, vehicle, and clothing.

On reading Parent moving to control Descendant, schools also differ. Some hold that Parent moving to control Descendant is an absolute bad sign for children, with no further examination. Others hold that one must see whether the Descendant is generated and supported, whether it advances, or whether it meets a clash to open, before deciding the degree of harm. This difference stems from views on the role of moving and transformed lines in the hexagram.

This article follows the conventions of Zeng Shan Bu Shi and Zeng Bu Bu Shi Zheng Zong, treating the Parent as the line generating the palace, representing parents, elders, and everything that shelters. In a specific reading, the Parent must be placed in the full context of generation and control in the whole hexagram, not viewed alone.

Example of Casting and Reading the Parent Spirit

Suppose on a Bing Chen day, in the Xin Chou month, someone asks about finding a job. Casting with three coins gives the hexagram Heaven over Earth Bi, with the Parent Spirit Xu earth holding the Self line. Analysis: the Parent holds the Self line, and is supported by both the Chou month and Chen day, both Earth, so the Parent is strong. This shows the querent has documents, qualifications, or help from an elder. However, if the Descendant moves in the hexagram, the Descendant controls Officer, and Officer is the useful spirit for job seeking, so the job may meet obstacles.

Another case: on a Ji You day, in the Wu month, someone asks about buying a house. The hexagram is Fire over Wind Ding, with the Parent Spirit Yin wood holding the Self line. Analysis: Parent Yin wood is generated by the Wu month but controlled by the You day. This shows the house may have document problems, or the seller is not sincere. If the Wealth line moves to control the Parent, it is worse, because Wealth is the enemy of the Parent.

These examples only illustrate the method of reading, not absolute fortune. In actual reading, one must examine the day and month, moving lines, transformed lines, and all generating, controlling, clashing, and combining relations.

Summary of Key Points on the Parent Spirit

The Parent Spirit is the line whose element generates the palace element, representing parents, elders, and everything that shelters such as house, vehicle, clothing, documents, letters, and news. In reading, the Parent is taken as the useful spirit for matters of parents, study, qualifications, property, and contracts. The Parent is also the enemy of the Descendant because Parent controls Descendant. Reading the Parent as strong, weak, moving, or transformed must be placed in the full context of generation and control in the whole hexagram, not viewed alone. Schools may differ on listing matters belonging to the Parent and on the severity of Parent moving to control Descendant, so when reading one should state which convention is being followed.
