What is Kỳ yên?
Kỳ yên is the largest prayer-for-peace rite of the year at a southern Vietnamese communal house (đình), asking for a peaceful village, good harvests and national peace. The name combines "kỳ" (to pray) and "yên" (peace): the rite thanks the tutelary deity (Thành hoàng) and the founding ancestors, and asks the deity for continued protection.
The timing differs from one communal house to another. At Tân Chánh communal house (former Long An province, now part of Tây Ninh), Kỳ yên is normally held after the harvest, in the eighth or ninth lunar month[4].

Bình Thủy communal house holds two rites each year: Kỳ yên Thượng điền from the 12th to the 14th of the fourth lunar month, and the Hạ điền rite on the 14th and 15th of the twelfth lunar month[7]. The two rites express the tradition of remembering one's roots[1].
| Rite | Lunar dates | Next occurrence |
|---|---|---|
| Hạ điền, Bính Ngọ year | 14th and 15th of the twelfth month | 21 and 22 January 2027 |

In Đỗ Thị Hà Thơ's survey of communal houses in Đồng Tháp, the communal houses of the Mekong region use common names: Hạ điền is going down to the fields to sow, Thượng điền is celebrating a bountiful harvest[6].
What is Bình Thủy communal house?
Bình Thủy communal house, formally Long Tuyền cổ miếu, was founded in 1844, in Bình Thủy ward, about 5 km from the centre of Cần Thơ city[7]. It received a royal decree naming its deity Bổn Cảnh Thành Hoàng in 1852 under Emperor Tự Đức and was ranked a national relic in 1989[2].
Legend has it that in the year Giáp Thìn (1844) a severe storm and flood struck Long Tuyền village; when the villagers prospered again, they built a wooden, thatched communal house at the mouth of the Bình Thủy canal to pray for a peaceful livelihood[3].
The main hall worships the tutelary deity and many notable figures; outside are two large shrines to the God of Agriculture (Thần Nông) and the Tiger God, and near the gate two shrines to the Forest God and the God of Canal Digging[1]. Later, people added patriots such as Đinh Công Tráng, Nguyễn Trung Trực and Bùi Hữu Nghĩa to the altars[1].

Who organises Kỳ yên at southern communal houses?
The Ban Quý tế, formerly the Ban Hương chức đình, is in charge of the offerings, separate from the government. Sơn Nam wrote that "the French, seeing that the offerings had nothing to do with administration, separated them and set up a distinct Ban Hương Chức đình solely for the offerings"[5]. This is a feature of southern communal houses compared with the North, where offerings to the tutelary deity were the village authorities' duty[5].
What happens in the festive part of Kỳ yên?
The festive part includes a book exhibition, a quiz on Cần Thơ's history and culture, the "Bánh ngon Bình Thủy" cake festival, a sweet sticky-rice tray contest, classical tuồng, cải lương performances and a traditional cycling race[2]. Other years add calligraphy, sketching, tourism promotion stalls and Chinese chess contests[3].
