TL;DR: The Eight White Star is one of the Nine Stars, associated with the Earth element, and governs wealth, reputation, and career advancement when in a favorable palace. However, when encountering inauspicious stars or affected by period energy, it can cause digestive, bone, and joint issues, as well as disputes. Understanding its flying mechanisms and remedies is key to effective application.
What is the Eight White Star in Flying Star Feng Shui?
Flying Star Feng Shui is an important school that uses the Nine Stars system to explain the movement of qi and the influence of time and space on human destiny. The Nine Stars are: One White (Water), Two Black (Earth), Three Jade (Wood), Four Green (Wood), Five Yellow (Earth), Six White (Metal), Seven Red (Metal), Eight White (Earth) and Nine Purple (Fire). In each period (20 years) and each year, these stars fly to different palaces on the Luopan (feng shui compass), forming a wide variety of auspicious and inauspicious combinations.
In this system, the Eight White star (八白) belongs to the Earth element and is considered one of the most important auspicious stars, especially during Period 8 (2004-2023) when it served as the ruling star. Today, as we move into Period 9 (2024-2043), Eight White has become a retiring star but still carries considerable auspicious meaning. This article will examine in depth the nature, meaning and practical application of the Eight White star in feng shui.
What is the origin and nature of the Eight White star?
How does the Eight White star originate from the He Tu and Luo Shu?
The Eight White star is tied to the number 8 in the Luo Shu, a mysterious diagram that predates even the I Ching. In the Luo Shu, the number 8 sits in the Gen palace (Northeast), symbolising mountains, stillness and endurance. In terms of yin-yang philosophy, the number 8 belongs to the Earth element and carries yin within yang, representing stability, accumulation and nourishment.
According to He Tu theory, the number 8 pairs with the number 7 to form a generating-completing pair, in which 8 is the completing number of the Fire element (the generating number being 7). This creates a special relationship between Eight White (Earth) and Nine Purple (Fire), since Fire generates Earth, giving Eight White a powerful boost of energy. For this reason, even in Period 9, Eight White still receives support from the ruling Nine Purple star.
What are the five-element characteristics and symbolism of the Eight White star?
Eight White belongs to the Earth element, specifically yang Earth (Earth of high mountains), and carries the characteristics of the Gen trigram: still, solid, tolerant and supportive. In nature it resembles a great mountain, which not only shelters but also gathers life energy. In human terms, Eight White represents the father, the pillar of the family, or respected leaders with calm and decisive characters.
The colours representing Eight White are white, pale yellow or cream, expressing purity and nobility. In terms of direction, it is linked to the Northeast, a region of rugged mountains rich in resources. In the human body, Eight White relates to the stomach, spleen and digestive system, as well as the bones and joints, given the solid nature of Earth.
How does Eight White operate in Flying Star Feng Shui?
What are the ruling, generating and retiring states?
In Flying Star Feng Shui, each star has a different state depending on the period. The ruling star is the star matching the number of the current period and holds the greatest power. The generating star is the star whose element is produced by the element of the current period and carries the next wave of positive energy. Retiring stars belong to earlier periods and have lost most of their strength.
In Period 9 (2024-2043), Nine Purple (Fire) is the ruling star and Eight White (Earth) is the generating star, because Fire generates Earth. This means Eight White still retains a source of positive energy; although it is no longer at its peak as in Period 8, it remains a valuable auspicious star. It represents lasting wealth, long-term stability and good relationships built up over time.
The yearly flight of Eight White
Each year, Eight White moves to a different palace according to the flying star cycle. For example, in the Giáp Thìn year of 2024, Eight White sits in the Xun palace (Southeast), while in 2025 it moves to the Chan palace (due East). This movement creates different effects on each area of the home.
When Eight White arrives in a palace, it interacts with the palace's original star and with other stars gathered there. If Eight White reaches a palace with good stars such as One White (Water) or Six White (Metal), it forms a combination favourable for wealth and benefactors. Conversely, if Eight White meets Two Black (illness) or Three Jade (gossip and disputes), its auspiciousness may be reduced or turn into health problems and conflicts.
What do the auspicious and inauspicious meanings of the Eight White star mean?
Eight White meeting auspicious stars: Wealth and prosperity
When Eight White sits in a good palace or combines with other auspicious stars, it brings outstanding good fortune. Specifically:
| Combination | Five-element interaction | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Eight White meets One White (Water) | Earth controls Water, but because One White is pure Water, this interaction creates an unimpeded flow of wealth | Very good for business and trade, especially industries related to transport and communications |
| Eight White meets Six White (Metal) | Earth generates Metal, forming a fine chain of generating energy | Brings reputation, authority and career advancement, well suited to people in politics, management or social work |
| Eight White meets Nine Purple (Fire) | Fire generates Earth, giving Eight White a powerful boost of energy | In the current Period 9, this combination is especially good for career development, study and long-term projects |
Eight White meeting inauspicious stars: Potential risks
Although it is an auspicious star, Eight White can produce unwanted effects when it meets inauspicious stars:
| Combination | Five-element interaction | Consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Eight White meets Two Black (Illness) | Both belong to the Earth element, creating stagnation and blockage | May cause digestive and stomach ailments, or a lasting sense of fatigue and lethargy. At work it creates delays and difficulty in completing goals |
| Eight White meets Three Jade (Gossip and disputes) | Wood controls Earth, causing Eight White to be harmed | May lead to arguments and lawsuits involving money, property or real estate. Extra care is needed in legal transactions |
| Eight White meets Five Yellow (Great Sha) | This is an extremely bad combination, because Five Yellow is an exceptionally strong Earth star, and combined with Eight White it creates an excessively strong Earth configuration | The consequences may be accidents, serious illness, or major financial losses. This area needs to be remedied immediately |
How does the Eight White star affect different locations in the home?
The position of Eight White in the home also determines its meaning:
| Location | Effect |
|---|---|
| Living room or study | Very good for career, helping the household head find more opportunities for promotion and be well regarded by superiors and colleagues |
| Bedroom | Brings good sleep and abundant health. For single people, this is a good position for meeting and forming relationships with partners of standing |
| Kitchen | The Fire of the stove generates the Earth of Eight White, helping wealth increase and the family enjoy warmth and happiness. However, avoid letting the stove burn too fiercely, which would cause overheating |
| Bathroom or storage room | Weakens the good energy of Eight White, which may cause wealth to leak away and work to meet many obstacles |
How do you apply and remedy the Eight White star?
How do you activate wealth when Eight White is in a good palace?
When Eight White sits in good palaces such as the Wealth palace, the Generating Qi palace or other important positions in the home, the household head can activate positive energy in several ways:
- Use objects belonging to the Earth element, such as yellow quartz crystal, ceramics, or decorations in yellow, brown or cream.
- Place a small potted plant with a woody stem (Wood element) to create a mild Wood-controls-Earth configuration, helping to regulate the energy and prevent stagnation.
- Hang a metal wind chime (Metal element), because Earth generates Metal, which helps conduct qi and create good circulation.
- Light a lamp or use warm lighting in this area, because Fire generates Earth, helping to strengthen the energy.
How do you remedy the situation when Eight White meets inauspicious stars?
When Eight White is in a bad position or combines with inauspicious stars, remedial measures are needed:
- Use the Metal element to drain the qi: Because Earth generates Metal, placing metal objects such as coins, metal wind chimes or metal statues in this area will help drain the excessive Earth qi and reduce the harm.
- Use contrasting colours: Green (Wood element) can be used to control Earth, but with care, because using too much may backfire.
- Keep the area clean and open: Avoid piling up objects, because this increases the stagnant nature of Earth and makes the fortune even more blocked.
- Place water (Water element): Because Earth controls Water, water can reduce the strength of Earth. However, this should be done carefully and with expert guidance to avoid creating conflict.
Notes on timing
At present, in Period 9, applying Eight White requires adjustment compared with Period 8. Specifically:
- Do not rely too heavily on Eight White as before; instead combine it with Nine Purple (the ruling star) for the best effect.
- In Period 9, Eight White leans towards lasting wealth and long-term accumulation rather than rapid, sudden riches.
- Industries related to real estate, construction and mining can still receive support from Eight White, but no longer as strongly as in the 2004-2023 period.
What are comparative perspectives and points to note in use?
Comparison between feng shui schools
While Flying Star Feng Shui regards Eight White as an important auspicious star, other schools see it differently. Eight Mansions feng shui does not use the concept of period cycles, so it makes no distinction between ruling and retiring stars. Landform (terrain) feng shui focuses on landforms and natural scenery rather than stars. Each school has its own value, and combining them flexibly gives a more comprehensive view.
Scientific and psychological perspectives
From a scientific standpoint, no research has proven a direct link between the positions of the stars in feng shui and human destiny. However, many researchers hold that feng shui may work through psychological and environmental principles. Arranging a home sensibly and creating a comfortable, clean and organised living space will certainly bring a sense of peace and confidence, which in turn helps people make wiser decisions.
Important points to note
- Do not be overly superstitious or rely entirely on feng shui while neglecting personal effort in work and life.
- Combine feng shui knowledge with scientific, comfortable and aesthetic living space design.
- When facing serious health problems, consult a specialist doctor rather than relying only on feng shui measures.
- Accurately determining the position of Eight White in the home requires expert advice or the use of an accurate feng shui compass.
