TL;DR: The Tuyệt star in the Trường Sinh Cycle symbolizes endings, severance, and hidden beginnings. Depending on its palace position, it manifests as annihilation, loss, or an opportunity for rebirth, requiring acceptance and transformation to overcome adversity.
What is the Tuyệt star in the Trường Sinh cycle?
In the vast knowledge of Tử Vi Đẩu Số, the Trường Sinh Cycle is an important system of 12 stars reflecting the life cycle of all things, from birth, growth, prosperity, decline, and rebirth. This cycle includes the stars: Trường Sinh, Mộc Dục, Quan Đới, Lâm Quan, Đế Vượng, Suy, Bệnh, Tử, Mộ, Tuyệt, Thai, Dưỡng. Each star carries its own meaning, and the Tuyệt star, positioned 10th, represents the final stage of life before transitioning to Thai and Dưỡng to begin a new cycle.
The Tuyệt star, as its name suggests, symbolizes extinction, finality, cessation, and nothingness. In Eastern philosophy, this is not a complete end but a transformation, a necessary condition for rebirth. When something reaches the point of Tuyệt, it becomes completely empty and clean, from which new life (Thai) sprouts. Therefore, the Tuyệt star is not entirely bad; it carries the meaning of severance and letting go of the old to welcome the new, ending one phase to open another.

How does the Tuyệt star work?
In a Tử Vi chart, each palace has a star from the Trường Sinh Cycle, depending on the palace's position relative to the Mệnh palace. The Tuyệt star can reside in any palace, depending on the birth month and hour. Its mechanism is based on yin-yang and five elements philosophy: Tuyệt belongs to the Water element, but in an extremely weakened state, nearly depleted. It interacts with other stars in the same palace, stars in opposing palaces, and especially with the main star governing the Mệnh palace to create specific meanings.
The Tuyệt star is often considered a minor star, supporting or moderating the meanings of main stars and others. When alongside auspicious stars like Thiên Khôi or Thiên Việt, it can reduce danger or create positive transformation. Conversely, when with inauspicious stars like Địa Không or Địa Kiếp, it can amplify disadvantage and breakdown. This interaction creates layers of meaning, requiring a holistic view of the chart.

With Hóa Khoa, Hóa Quyền, or Hóa Lộc, it can mitigate negative effects and bring intelligence and clarity in solving difficult problems.
Comparative Perspectives and Holistic Interpretation
In Tử Vi, two schools interpret the Tuyệt star. One views it as a malefic star causing loss, breakdown, and despair, requiring avoidance or mitigation via saving stars. Another sees it as an opportunity for rebirth, helping people let go of what no longer serves and enabling new growth. In reality, its meaning depends heavily on position, combinations, and the individual's Mệnh palace. Therefore, avoid hasty conclusions; instead, consider the whole chart, cross-reference multiple factors for an objective and comprehensive view.
