TL;DR: The lunar year Canh Tuất begins with Tết on 2 February 2030, with nạp âm Thoa Xuyến Kim; in Bát Tự the Canh Tuất year pillar begins at 02:08 on 4 February 2030. In the folk way of matching ages, the branch Tuất is tam hợp with Dần and Ngọ, lục hợp with Mão, tứ hành xung with Thìn, Sửu and Mùi, and lục hại with Dậu; the stem Canh combines with Ất and clashes with Giáp; the child's Metal element is generated by Earth, overcomes Wood and is overcome by Fire. This is a folk belief that has never been verified.
How are the can chi and nạp âm of 2030 Canh Tuất determined?
In the can chi calendar, 2030 is the year Canh Tuất: the zodiac animal Tuất (dog), the heavenly stem Canh (yang metal), the earthly branch Tuất (yang earth). The nạp âm of the pair Canh Tuất and Tân Hợi is Thoa Xuyến Kim, meaning ornamental metal.
The book Hiệp kỷ biện phương thư explains the name: "Canh Tuất and Tân Hợi have nạp âm metal; it is called Thoa Xuyến Kim because metal reaching Tuất and Hợi is in decline and sickness; in decline and sickness it is naturally weak".
Where the year begins depends on the method. Folk age reckoning and Tử Vi change the year at Tết: the Canh Tuất year begins with Tết on 2 February 2030 and runs to the end of 22 January 2031, since Tết of Tân Hợi falls on 23 January 2031. Bát Tự changes the year pillar at the Lập Xuân solar term: the Canh Tuất year pillar begins at 02:08 on 4 February 2030 and runs to 07:59 on 4 February 2031 (Vietnam time). Because the two boundaries differ, a child born from 2 February 2030 up to 02:08 on 4 February 2030 is Canh Tuất by the lunar calendar but still has a Kỷ Dậu year pillar in Bát Tự; a child born from 23 January 2031 up to 07:59 on 4 February 2031 is Tân Hợi by the lunar calendar but still has a Canh Tuất year pillar in Bát Tự.
Stem, branch and nạp âm are three different layers of the same birth year: the stem Canh is metal, the branch Tuất is earth, and the nạp âm of the whole pair Canh Tuất is metal. When folk tradition speaks of the "mệnh" (destiny element) of a birth year, it usually means the nạp âm.
Why is Thoa Xuyến Kim described as "ornamental metal"?
Thoa Xuyến Kim is not raw metal cast into swords or forged into knives, but gold and silver worked into hairpins, bracelets and jewellery. This reading rests on the nạp âm explanation above: metal reaching Tuất and Hợi is in decline and sickness, and so soft and weak.
The book Hà Đồ trong văn minh Lạc Việt by Nguyễn Vũ Tuấn Anh also repeats this naming and adds that Thoa Xuyến Kim is "metal hairpin or ornamental gold"[1]. Tam mệnh thông hội by Vạn Dân Anh describes Thoa Xuyến Kim as jewellery "kept in the women's chambers" (藏之閨閣). These are the books' interpretations, not calendrical facts.
Which parents' birth years are compatible with a 2030 Canh Tuất child by can chi?
In the folk way of matching ages, the branch Tuất forms tam hợp (three harmonies) with Dần and Ngọ and lục hợp (six combinations) with Mão, so parents born in Dần, Ngọ and Mão years are seen as compatible by branch. Tuất shares a tứ hành xung (four clashes) group with Thìn, Sửu and Mùi and forms lục hại (six harms) with Dậu, so these years are seen as unfavourable by branch. Tý, Tỵ, Thân and Hợi neither combine nor clash with Tuất. By stem, Canh combines with Ất and clashes with Giáp, so parents born in an Ất-stem year are seen as compatible and those born in a Giáp-stem year as clashing.
These are conventions of age matching, not results of measurement. The book Tử Vi nghiệm lý toàn thư by Thiên Lương, discussing the years of a person's life cycle, treats the control between two stems as the root, and to know how far it goes one "must compare the nạp âm of the age with the nạp âm of the period"[2]; that is, in this book both stem and nạp âm are weighed, and the branch is not the only axis.
Which parents' nạp âm does Thoa Xuyến Kim suit?
By the five elements of nạp âm, Thoa Xuyến Kim is metal. Earth generates metal, metal generates water, metal overcomes wood, fire overcomes metal. In the folk way of matching ages, parents with an Earth nạp âm (such as Lộ Bàng Thổ, Thành Đầu Thổ, Đại Trạch Thổ) generate the child's element, parents with a Metal nạp âm share the child's element, and parents with a Water nạp âm are generated by the child's element: all three count as favourable. Parents with a Wood nạp âm are overcome by the child's element, and parents with a Fire nạp âm overcome the child's element: these two count as unfavourable.
Tam mệnh thông hội does not judge nạp âm by pure generation and control. The book writes of Thoa Xuyến Kim: "丙午真火庚戌所忌", meaning Canh Tuất shuns Bính Ngọ because Ngọ and Tuất join into a fire frame, even though the nạp âm of Bính Ngọ is Thiên Hà Thủy, which by pure generation and control would be favourable. In the same passage the book writes "爐中火庚戌最忌", meaning Canh Tuất shuns Lư Trung Hỏa most of all, the nạp âm of Bính Dần and Đinh Mão.
Table comparing parents' birth years with 2030 Canh Tuất
The table below is reckoned from the parents' lunar birth year (people born in January or February before Tết belong to the previous lunar year). Each column is a separate axis, with no scores added up.
| Parent's birth year | Can chi | Stem vs Canh | Branch vs Tuất | Parent's nạp âm | Nạp âm vs Thoa Xuyến Kim |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1985 | Ất Sửu | Combine | Tứ hành xung | Hải Trung Kim | Same element |
| 1986 | Bính Dần | Neither | Tam hợp | Lư Trung Hỏa | Parent's element overcomes the child's |
| 1987 | Đinh Mão | Neither | Lục hợp | Lư Trung Hỏa | Parent's element overcomes the child's |
| 1988 | Mậu Thìn | Neither | Tứ hành xung | Đại Lâm Mộc | Child's element overcomes the parent's |
| 1989 | Kỷ Tỵ | Neither | Neither | Đại Lâm Mộc | Child's element overcomes the parent's |
| 1990 | Canh Ngọ | Same stem | Tam hợp | Lộ Bàng Thổ | Parent's element generates the child's |
| 1991 | Tân Mùi | Neither | Tứ hành xung | Lộ Bàng Thổ | Parent's element generates the child's |
| 1992 | Nhâm Thân | Neither | Neither | Kiếm Phong Kim | Same element |
| 1993 | Quý Dậu | Neither | Lục hại | Kiếm Phong Kim | Same element |
| 1994 | Giáp Tuất | Clash | Same branch | Sơn Đầu Hỏa | Parent's element overcomes the child's |
| 1995 | Ất Hợi | Combine | Neither | Sơn Đầu Hỏa | Parent's element overcomes the child's |
| 1996 | Bính Tý | Neither | Neither | Giản Hạ Thủy | Child's element generates the parent's |
| 1997 | Đinh Sửu | Neither | Tứ hành xung | Giản Hạ Thủy | Child's element generates the parent's |
| 1998 | Mậu Dần | Neither | Tam hợp | Thành Đầu Thổ | Parent's element generates the child's |
| 1999 | Kỷ Mão | Neither | Lục hợp | Thành Đầu Thổ | Parent's element generates the child's |
| 2000 | Canh Thìn | Same stem | Tứ hành xung | Bạch Lạp Kim | Same element |
Many years give axes that point in opposite directions: Bính Dần 1986 is tam hợp by branch but its nạp âm Lư Trung Hỏa overcomes the child's element, and Ất Sửu 1985 combines by stem but is tứ hành xung by branch. To check all three axes for the parents' own birth years, together with birth month and hour, you can use the Xem năm sinh con tool.
Why should year compatibility not be treated as decisive?
Bát Tự books weigh all four pillars of year, month, day and hour of birth, not just the birth year. For small children, Tử Vi đẩu số tân biên by Vân Đằng Thái Thứ Lang writes that when reading a child's chart one "must wait until after age 12 before judging longevity"[3], because a child under 12 is still tender and not yet closely under the influence of the stars.
No research has shown that the can chi birth year affects a person's health or life. The actual date and hour of birth are decided by the health of mother and child, as the doctor advises.
Nhật Nguyệt's suggestion: how to use year compatibility sensibly
Nhật Nguyệt's suggestion: if your family cares about year compatibility, read it as a cultural belief, and read each axis separately instead of looking for one "most compatible" year. With older relatives who value year compatibility, it can help to mention that the old books themselves require all four pillars, so the birth year alone is not enough.
Common misunderstandings about 2030 Canh Tuất
A common misunderstanding is to think Canh Tuất belongs to the Earth element because the branch Tuất is earth, and then conclude the child suits parents with a Fire element because fire generates earth. In fact the stem Canh is metal, the branch Tuất is earth and the nạp âm is metal; when speaking of "mệnh", folk tradition uses the nạp âm, and by nạp âm fire overcomes metal. A second misunderstanding is to think the solar year 2030 coincides exactly with the Canh Tuất age; in fact a child born in January 2030 is still Kỷ Dậu, and a child born from 23 January 2031 is already Tân Hợi by the lunar calendar. A third misunderstanding equates "compatible years" with "compatible personalities", when these are two different scopes: one is a can chi convention, the other is a real human relationship.
